This magnificent Portal Tomb was built c.3,500BC. Excavations revealed the remains of over 30 individuals interred here, including a young boy with the earliest known instance of Down's Syndrome in the world.

Good morning, the cloud rolling over Ben Bulben in Co.Sligo and the story of its fairies told by WB Yates.
In the side of Ben Bulben is a white square in the limestone. It is said to be the door of fairyland. There is no more inaccessible place in existence than this white square door; no human foot has ever gone near it, not even the mountain goats can browse the saxifrage beside its mysterious whiteness. Tradition says that it swings open at nightfall and lets pour through an unearthly troop of hurrying spirits. To those gifted to hear their voices the air will be full at such a moment with a sound like whistling. Many have been carried away out of the neighbouring villages by this troop of riders. I have quite a number of records beside me, picked up at odd times from the faithful memories of old peasants. Brides and new-born children are especially in danger. Peasant mothers, too, are sometimes carried off to nurse the children of the fairies. At the end of seven years they have a chance of returning, and if they do not escape then are always prisoners. A woman, said still to be living, was taken from near a village called Ballisodare, and when she came home after seven years she had no toes-she had danced them off. It is not possible to find out whether the stolen people are happy among โthe gentryโ, as the fairies are called for politeness. Accounts differ. Some say they are happy enough, but lose their souls, because, perhaps, the soul cannot live without sorrow. Others will have it that they are always wretched, longing for their friends, and that the splendour of the fairy kingdom is merely a magical delusion, woven to deceive the minds of men by poor little withered apparitions who live in caves and barn laces. But this is, I suspect, a theological opinion, invented because all goblins are pagans. Many things about fairies, indeed, are most uncertain. We do not even know whether they die. An old Gaelic poem says, โDeath is even among the fairiesโ, but then many stories represent them as hundreds of years old.

โThe Blasket Islands are a now uninhabited group of islands off the west coast of Ireland, in County Kerry and the most western point of Ireland and Europe. The islands are best known from the story telling of Muiris ร Sรบilleabhรกin and Peig Sayers, as well as โTwenty Years A-Growingโ by Muiris ร Sรบilleabhรกรญn.
During the summer months it is possible to visit the Great Blasket Island and witness how the villagers lived there in the past, as nothing as practically changed since they left the island in 1953.
The boat trip includes regular tours which describe and explain the island life, history and itโs famous writers.
You can appreciate the unique isolation and beauty of the Great Blasket and surrounding islands by walking across the deserted historic village, beach and beautiful green with sea views all around. The books which they penned have been translated into many languages and have been read by people from every walk of life.
You can also see seals and will notice many times that they are also gazing at you!
Overall, itโs a beautiful place with lots of history of harsher times, and it is possible to rent a property or two to spend up to a few days there.โ Add this to your list๐ **le

Clifden Castle is a ruined manor house west of the town of Clifden in the Connemara region of County Galway, Ireland. It was built c. 1818 for John D'Arcy, the local landowner, in the Gothic Revival style. Uninhabited after 1894 it fell into disrepair. In 1935, ownership passed to a group of tenants, who were to own it jointly, and it quickly became a ruin.

Irish Sky Garden in the Liss Ard Estate, Skibbereen, Co. Cork. Described as a floating garden in the sky.
It was designed by American James Turrell, he is famed for his large scale experimentations with light & space, challenging the viewer to engage with the boundaries & wonder of human perception.
It is set against the natural landscape of the Celtic Liss Ard, an ancient structure half reclaimed by nature which lends its own fairytale whimsy to the location. So even though the sky garden is a contemporary piece of art with a strikingly postmodern shape & aesthetic, it is the perfect complement to a place that is already a bridge between two worlds.
Shaped like a bowl, the structure features a central stone plinth reminiscent of ancient Celtic altars. The altar rises up at an angle & features two stone footrests on each end to allow the viewer to lie down facing up & out toward the edge of the crater above. All that is visible from this vantage point is the green grass & sky. According to Turrell, โthe most important thing is that inside turns into outside & the other way around, in the sense that relationships between the Irish landscape and sky changes".
