Hagerstown Highlight – Krumpe’s Do-nuts
Krumpe’s Do-nuts has been a Hagerstown treasure for over 80 years. I have never had better donuts than those made by Krumpe’s. The Krumpe family bakes their potato dough donuts at night and delivers them to their wholesale customers in the morning.
When Bill and Dory were in high school, we and our friends would visit the bakery at night and buy a dozen of the warm glazed delights and down them with milk. (I know, wild teen years, right?) In those days, we would walk right into the bakery where freshly baked donuts were dipped into vats of warm glaze and dried on racks. The air was filled with the aroma of the glaze and the baking donuts. The bakers would pause from their work and fill our orders. These days there is a proper counter in the bakery, but you can still see the donuts being made behind it.
Krumpe’s makes many varieties of donuts besides the classic glazed. The chocolate-covered cream-filled are a personal favorite.
So, when you visit Hagerstown, be sure to make a nighttime visit to Krumpe’s donuts. They are open from 7:00 pm until 11:00 pm every night except Saturday. The bakery is located at 912 Maryland Avenue. They are in the back of the building, which you access by Do-nut Alley. Then just follow the crowd and get in line. Tip: Let them know if you are a Krumpe’s first-timer.
