Today we had Asparagus Pizza at an old favorite with a new name. It is now called "Woodstock Trading Post Country Stand," formerly known as Sweet Evalina's Stand. Fortunately, there has been no change to the receipe for the Asparagus Pizza. The squeze of lemon is the "pièce de résistance." It is just 16 miles North of the Quiet Corner Cottage traveling on an official scenic State Route 169.

This is a Barred Owl recently filmed in the Quiet Corner, the mother appears first and the offspring climbs on top to see what is going on. Right at the end of the video you can hear the great call of another Barred Owl somewhere in the distance.

Downtown Putnum, celebrates small-town America and is just 16 miles from the Quiet Corner Cottage and is always an interesting place to visit. Tomorrow there is the Great Pumpkin Festival: A community celebration of fall featuring The Great Pumpkin, craft and art vendors, live music, activities for the kids, and MUCH MORE!

While cutting the grass at the Quiet Corner Cottage, I got to see a couple of young deer romping and playing in the field across the street. Then I watched a bluebird emerge from her home in the house we put out for her and her family in the front yard. Then I got to admire the beauty of the Rhotodyndron in full bloom attracting all sorts of attention from beautiful butterflies and bees..

Harkness Memorial State Park

In 1907, Edward and Mary Harkness moved into their 42-room Italianate mansion, Eolia, on the Connecticut shoreline. It was the crown jewel of a 230-acre property that also boasted a working farm with dairy cows and chickens, vegetable and flower gardens, a five-car garage—even a nine-hole golf course. When Mary Harkness died in 1950, she bequeathed it all to the state, noting in her will that the grounds be used “for the purpose of promoting good health.”

By all means, help fulfill Mary’s edict by strolling the paths through the gardens; in May, this is quite a treat, thanks to the profusion of perennials. The great expanse of lawn slopes down to the shore, perfect for a walk amid sand and shells. If you’ve registered for a day license and brought your gear, you can head to the rocks to lure stripers and blues. Prefer picnicking to fishing? Sticking Around: Though there’s no camping at Harkness, but just a 30-minute drive (25.1 miles) brings you to the Quiet Corner Bungalow in Norwich. It is less than an hour (42.4 miles) to the Quiet Corner Cottage in Hampton and less than 45 minutes (33 miles) to the Quiet Corner Farm House in Lebanon.

Going to Town: Head to nearby Ocean Beach in New London to go for a dip, (but you can also wade at the Harkness mansion mini-beach too) then make the requisite stop at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock for lobster rolls alongside the Thames River.

With the temperatures soaring into the 80s this week. It might be time to find a Coastal seafood shack. My father-in-law introduced us to Lenny & Joe’s in Madison, back when it was really just a little shack but the product was so good that the shack really grew and grew into the mega seafood place that it is today.

This family from Illinois discovered just how much you can do if you set up your base in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut. They got into New York City, traveled out to Cape Cod, enjoyed the Aquarium and Mystic Seaport, and got to see the Cliff Walk and tour the Mansions in Newport, RI. Each night upon their return, they enjoyed family time around the fire pit during their 8 day stay. They also mentioned the beautiful back roads and scenic highways that are lined with ancient rock walls, and gorgeous rural scenery and all there is to take in as you travel between the Quiet Corner and civilization in Manchester, CT.

This video was taken on Morey Road where it crosses the Natchaug River before it becomes Station Road in Hampton, as you drive through the Natchaug State Forest on your way to the Quiet Corner Cottage.

The Quiet Corner Cottage is what is known as a "Full Dormer Cape." The dormer can be built in either the front or back of the house, however in a typical Cape Cod style home, it's often used in the back. This type of dormer extends the interior space without adding to the footprint of the home. From the front, it does not look as big as it turns out to be, once you are inside. To see for yourself, book a weekend soon!
