Hello Harlan shared this status including facts about Harlan County!! Check it out!!!!

Hello, April! We would typically be bringing you information on the top ten April events in downtown Harlan. We are proud to report that our community is staying so there are no April events in our community. In place of our event list, we put together this list of Harlan County facts!

1) The first woman elected to office in Harlan County was Sudie Ward. She was elected in 1914 to serve as a trustee for the Harlan Common Graded School (later Harlan Independent Schools). That’s pretty impressive considering women wouldn’t receive the right to vote for six more years.

2) Harlan County has over 14,000 acres of preserves, parks, and recreation areas. That’s over half an acre for every man, woman, and child in Harlan County. That’s plenty of room for social distancing!

3) Harlan County is home to 482 types of wildflowers, 155 kinds of birds, and 36 varieties of mammals.

4) The Cumberland River is 688 miles long and passes through Kentucky and Tennessee before emptying into the Ohio River. Its journey begins where the Poor Fork, Martins Fork, and Clover Fork rivers meet near Baxter. The water crashing over Cumberland Falls and snaking around the city of Nashville originated behind the Dairy Queen in Harlan.

5) Harlan County has been home to sports legends like Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones, Bernie Bickerstaff, and Cawood Ledford. Musicians like Jordan Smith and Nick Lachey rose from Harlan County. Harlan County has produced writers like George Ella Lyon and leaders like Congresswoman Louise Slaughter.

6) The song “Which Side Are You On?” has been used extensively in labor and social struggles. It was written in Harlan County in 1931 by Florence Reece. Reece’s husband was a union organizer. When company officials intruded on the Reece Family home, Florence was inspired to write the song and did so on the back of a wall calendar.

7) Harlan County has been the filming site for multiple movies including Above Suspicion, the Evening Hour, and the Oscar Winning Documentary Harlan County U.S.A.

8) Black Mountain Off Road Adventure Area is Kentucky’s highest elevated off-road park.

9) Harlan County and the city of Harlan were named after Silas Harlan. He spent most of his time during the Revolutionary War fighting along the frontier in Kentucky. There is no evidence suggesting he ever visited the area now known as Harlan County but his reputation as a brave and accomplished soldier inspired founders to name the community after him.

10) The Kentucky legislature officially recognized Harlan County on April 1, 1819 (no joke!) but no action was taken on the part of the local leaders. In 1820, the Kentucky legislature had to insist officials in Harlan County follow through with the work of forming a government and filling government positions.

Watch our page for more information about how you can support local businesses and occupy your family during this emergency.
