This Piping Plover was giving the Semipalmated Plover a piece of it mind and I was lucky enough to be there to capture it! I love observing and photographing shorebirds exactly for moments like this! The abundance of shorebirds along the Gulf Coast of Texas makes it a perfect place to get dynamic shots of these incredible birds.

Sometimes you get really really lucky! I've been lucky over the past year to be able to guide in the Rio Grande Valley and at the Santa Margarita Ranch . Yesterday while I was guiding a group from the Laredo Bird Festival at the Ranch the Crane Hawk, only the second ever for the US originally found at Salineno on January 29th, decided to grace us with its presence! Over and over and over again! It was truly a remarkable experience, though the Ranch's group of Brown Jays did not agree and would attack it every time they saw it! I've observed Crane Hawk 5-6 times in the tropics for a combined total of about 1 minute, while I've now be fortunate to watch this Texas Crane for an extended period. What an incredible species! The saying that its better to be lucky than good truly applies here!

In the past few days I've seen a slew of rare birds in south Texas: Crane Hawk, Brown Jay, Cattle Tyrant, Bar-tailed Godwit, Crimson-collared Grosbeak among others. More though than the rarities, it is the incredible numbers of birds found in south Texas and the views that can be enjoyed that make this area such a fun place to be a birder and to guide. Loving my first winter in the RGV!

2024 began for me in the Rio Grande Valley as I started my first winter guiding in the area. I hit the ground running and its been a crazy few weeks but I finally got my computer so I can post the photos. It's been great showing people how great south Texas birds are and how fun the birding can be! I feel really privileged to be in this area for the next few months. I always learn a ton in this area just because of the volume of birds I get to observe. It's been a blast!
