Slovenia is a small country the size of NH located at the borders of Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary. They are known for their beekeeping practices throughout Europe and one out of every 250 people are beekeepers. Slovenian Beekeeping: Our Story

Slovenia is a small country the size of NH located at the borders of Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary; it is the only country connecting the Alps to the Mediterranean! It is a country of extraordinary biodiversity (thanks to the Honey Bee) while preserving its natural resources. Known for their beekeeping practices throughout Europe, one out of every 250 people is beekeeper, which is frequently passed down through many generations. Their style of beekeeping is different from ours in that the bee hive boxes are worked from the back; not from above. Many have bee houses to keep the hive boxes in so that the beekeeper (and the bees!) are sheltered and protected from the weather. The AZ Hives are often beautifully decorated with painted panels depicting stories, myths and religious images. Beekeeping is accessible to almost anyone due to no heaving lifting being involved; the frames slide out like books on a shelf! Along with selling original (imported) Slovenian AZ Hives and supplies, we also take small groups of people (not all beekeepers) twice a year to Slovenia. These are very personalized tours and we only stay in farmhouses or with friends. We work with ApiTours in Slovenia, a travel agency that specializes in apitourism. The tours will take you to many beautiful areas and you will meet many wonderful Slovene beekeepers and learn AZ hive management directly from them. It is truly extraordinary to experience this land rich with adventure, beauty, Nature and the Bees!
