The Valhalla Recreation Area in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest will be closed from June 19, 2024, to August 1, 2024 to realign the recreation trail and conduct site improvements. During this time, All Terrain Vehicle (“ATV”) / Utility Task Vehicle (“UTV”) Trail 33 will be closed; a section of ATV/UTV Trail 31 will be closed at the intersection with ATV/UTV Trail 35. Some ski trails that are popular for walking and hiking will also be closed. These temporary closures are so that work can be accomplished to realign the recreation trail and conduct other site improvements.

A map of the restricted area is provided for clarity. USDA Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps are available online for visitors to reference to identify alternative routes. The maps are located online here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/cnnf/maps-pubs. While the section of road is temporarily closed, USDA Forest Service officials encourage travelers to bring along a paper map or other navigational resource, and plan for extra time that might be needed.

This project is funded by Legacy Restoration Fund (https://usfs.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/24d16d9786c44b24aba1281b71f10f46 =0913-FY21-9BH) through the Great American Outdoors Act (https://www.fs.usda.gov/managing-land/gaoa). The Legacy Restoration Fund allows the USDA Forest Service to address deferred maintenance on critical facilities as well as improve critical infrastructure essential for use and enjoyment of national forests and grasslands.

The Valhalla Recreation Area is a popular site year-round for cross-country skiers, hikers, snowmobilers, and ATV/UTV riders. Parking and snow removal has been a consistent challenge. Expansion of the parking lot and realignment of trail entrances will increase parking capacity and improve trail navigation. Improvements will also be made to the chalet, including installation of snow guards on the roof and a patio on the west side of the building.

“We know this is a special place for the community and we thank everyone for their patience while the Valhalla Recreation Area is closed,” said USDA Forest Service Recreation Program Manager Karen Katz. “When completed, visitors are going to experience less congestion and a safer parking environment. We look forward to the improvements being completed by late summer.”

Exemptions to the prohibited motorized activity include any federal, state, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty and persons with a special use authorization or other USDA Forest Service authorization specifically exempting them from the effect of the closure.

Information about the Valhalla Recreation Area is available online, here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/cnnf/recarea/?recid=27853.
