The primary goal of the encounter programs is conservation education. Participants in hands-on encounters not only create memories that last a lifetime, but research indicates that these types of programs are also more likely to increase their interest in conservation-related knowledge and change their attitudes and behaviors long after the encounter is over.

Come see face to face, all different types of amphibians, birds, fish, invertebrates, reptiles, sharks and rays. They even have some brand new creatures like the diurnal baja blue rock lizard which can typically only be found on the tip of Baja California Peninsula in Northern Mexico and the cute new wood frog. Wood frogs exhibit a cryogenic freezing strategy to survive the winter. As much as 45% of the frog's body will freeze, ice forms in its tissues and its heart and respiration stop. Specialized proteins and glucose prevent this freezing process from causing cell death and as the weather warms, the frog literally thaws out and returns to activity.

Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than two hundred dollars. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, sixty-seven-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. By September 1955 she stood atop Maine’s Mount Katahdin, sang “America, the Beautiful,” and proclaimed, “I said I’ll do it, and I’ve done it.”
Driven by a painful marriage, Grandma Gatewood not only hiked the trail alone, she was the first person—man or woman—to walk it twice and three times. At age seventy-one, she hiked the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail. Gatewood became a hiking celebrity, and appeared on TV with Groucho Marx and Art Linkletter. The public attention she brought to the trail was unprecedented. Her vocal criticism of the lousy, difficult stretches led to bolstered maintenance, and very likely saved the trail from extinction.

Mackinac (MACK-in-awe) became one of the nation’s favored summer resort destinations during the Victorian era. Vacationers seeking the cooler weather on Mackinac Island arrived in large lake-excursion boats from Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago, and Detroit. They danced to Strauss’ waltzes, listened to Sousa’s stirring marches, dined on whitefish, and strolled along the broad decks. To accommodate overnight guests, boat and railroad companies financed the building of Grand Hotel.

Where We Go by Foot, Bike, or Horse
One of the most noticeable differences on Mackinac Island (which is accessible only by boat and plane) is the absence of automobiles. Visitors and residents travel by foot, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage. There are only 600 year-round residents. And during the summer, there are more than 500 horses.
