Our Story
Join Erie Canal Cruises aboard a Lil' Diamond vessel for a cruise on the most storied Canal in the world. The Erie Canal is an important part of the New York State Canal System and helped settle the West. Our Captains entertain with tales of the Canal: what Clinton's ditch was, how it helped to build the America we know today, how and why it was expanded, and why it is still important to upstate New York culture. Our 90-minute sight-seeing cruise is great for history lovers and nature lovers. We pass through giant storm gates reminiscent of the Thames Barrier, the Historic Fort Herkimer Church (second-oldest in NY) and often spot birds of interest such as green and blue herons and the occasional bald eagle. Lock 18, through which the vessel passes, is one of the last remaining 100 year old locks with all original equipment. As we enter the lock, the gates slowly close behind, and suddenly the lock house seems to rise into the air as the lock walls creep up alongside the boat. When something especially interesting happens, such as an eagle sighting or a multi-million dollar mega yacht approaching, the Captains interrupt their talk to make sure no one misses it.
We offer sight seeing cruises daily departing at 1:00 and/or 3:00pm from mid-May through mid-October. For an extended cruise experience, take a Living History Cruise that includes a tour of the Historic General Herkimer Homestead with costumed re-enactors and demonstrations, along with and a BBQ feast. The Living History Cruise travels through 2 locks and is offered select weekends. Another cruise option is our fun and exciting Friday Night Party Cruises with DJ and dancing. Rock the Lock as we travel through Lock 18 at sunset, a fun cruise for adults.
