PEAK Self provides education and experiences to improve sports performance and enjoyment. It applies psychological principals and techniques to develop athletes of all ages with skills and perspective to make themselves better athletes, teammates, community members, and people. PEAK Self grew out of my personal journey. For many years I lived for mountaineering and rock climbing throughout western
North America. After I completed my Masters in Psychology I pursued my career in counseling in Hawaii, an unexpected, yet amazing path. The North Cascades, the Rocky Mountains, the Wasatch, and [the Alaskan Range for NOLS] became inaccessible. I turned to surfing, marathon running, and eventually—my current passion—triathlon. I recognized the connection between physically pushing my edge and psychological well-being. I have worked with hundreds of youth and their parents and I have found that physical activity centers people and makes them more adept at problem solving and finding well being. The techniques of sport and psychology are mutually beneficial. PEAK Self is my project to leverage and develop the fundamental connection between mind and body. It is inspired by the joy and well being that accompanies sport and physical exercise, as well as the character developed through the grueling pursuit. It is committed to improving both physical performance and psychological well being by developing programs that promote activity with the right attitude and approach. Movement steadies the mind. Self-discipline hones the self. Psychological well-being is rooted in physiological balance. Quiet the mind, center the self, and cultivate your PEAK Self.
