Every September, the Homer community meets to observe a unique and moving tradition known as the Burning Basket. This event, established over 20 years ago, involves collaboratively weaving a large basket out of natural materials on the beach at Mariner Park. Participants are encouraged to inscribe and place personal messages within the basket, reflecting on losses, memories, or hopes.

The process and the eventual burning of the basket at sunset serve as a powerful act of collective remembrance and release. It allows individuals to let go of emotional burdens and honors personal or shared memories in a poignant, communal setting.
