Have you heard that Homer Area Beekeepers Association is offering three beekeeping mini-classes over the next three months. HABA members can take these classes at no cost. For non-members, the cost is $45 for all three sessions. HABA membership is open for all at a cost of $20 annually.

The first beekeeping class will take place from 3-5pm on Saturday, February 25th at the Homer United Methodist Church atrium.

We will be discussing the following:

● Where to buy honeybee packages and equipment. Pro/Cons of wooden ware/ polystyrene hives, and frames with foundation vs. foundationless frames.
● What types of bees we get in Alaska and their distinctive behavior.
● How to hive a package of bees. (This will repeat in April)
● What to do after you hive the bees. How and when to check on your queen.
● Anatomy of worker bees and queens.
● Feeders and sugar syrup.

Bees need a source of water to stay healthy and safe. Not only do they drink the water, but they also use it for air conditioning. On hot days, bees will spread a thin film of water over the baby bee cells. The water evaporates, cooling the hive.

I agreed.

✨🌎 Happy World Bee Day 🌍✨

Here are a few ways you can love your bees 🐝

🍯 Vote with your fork: You have a chance to make the world a better place for bees (and yourself) every time you eat. Support a local, thriving food system by supporting your small, people run farms and co-ops that farm with, not against nature, not against (if a farmer pours chemicals all over the landscape to control it, that’s not farming with nature).

🍯 Vote with your vote: Support good policy. Read beyond the headlines and go to draft language at your local, state, or the national level, and support policies that will help bees by sending letters and making phone calls to your lawmakers. They want to hear from you!

🍯 Don’t be afraid: Bees only eat nectar and pollen, and they are not interested in fried chicken or BBQ sauce. Some solitary bees like male wool carder bees and carpenter bees are territorial and can be aggressive, but no male bees have stingers!! Just let them go about their business, pollinating flowers, and watch where you step when you’re barefoot in the yard. As Sue Monk Kidd tells us in The Secret Life of Bees, “Don't be afraid, as no life-loving bee wants to sting you. Don't swat. Don't even think about swatting. If you feel angry, whistle. Anger agitates while whistling melts a bee's temper. Act like you know what you're doing, even if you don't. Above all, send the bees love. Every little thing wants to be loved.”
