When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.

It’s hard to believe it has been over a week since Hurricane Helene came across Western North Carolina. It has been a week of trauma, sadness, + being in survival mode for all of us here.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am beyond grateful to share that everyone in our town, on our team, + in our families are safe. We also feel extremely blessed that the Magnolia House faired well through the storm due to our being located on the higher ground of Hot Springs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are so sad to share that just beyond the end of our driveway, downtown Hot Springs has been devastated by the flood waters. The downtown area is currently muddy + non functioning. Uptown we have a few businesses that are still operational. The whole town has been without power + water for much of the time. Yesterday water was restored to most of us although the power is still being addressed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The town is still very much in the throws of crisis + figuring things out. Many business owners are committed to rebuilding although we are completely unsure of a timeline.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We have had so much outreach from so many it has been truly touching to witness. Our town has quickly mobilized our own AMAZING crisis management team. Donations are coming in by the truckload, soo many volunteers ready to help + many fundraisers set up. Hot Springs feels well loved and our town morale is high.

We are so very sad that our beloved town has been brought to a halt for now. It is a lot to take in and process... We are resolved to stay, support our community, and to be curious together about the next chapter that will surely unfold.

Despite the circumstances, we remain clear that our mission, as always, is to “hold space for it all...” - for our fellow citizens here in Hot Springs and in WNC at large, for sadness, for grief, for acceptance, for recovery, for being in it all together.

It all started in 1868....
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Magnolia House, originally known as The Rutland, was built in 1868 by Confederate Colonel James Henry Rumbough for his wife, Carrie, and their eight children.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Already a resident of what was then called Warm Springs, Rumbough owned the Mountain Park Hotel (located on what is now the geothermal Hot Springs Resort) and operated a stagecoach business. He used the home to oversee his businesses and entertain guests, including famed writer O. Henry and President Andrew Johnson, whose son married one of the Rumbough daughters on the property.

The 16-room house remained in the Rumbough family for generations until their fortune was gone. The House has undergone renovations over the years, including a 1999 restoration which brought it close to its original 1868 appearance which you see today!

We can hardly believe that it’s been 3 years of owning this space. It’s been a salve for our hearts

My favorite thing about owning this place is my regular walks of the property where I observe and quietly revel in the beauty of the gardens….

Each week, each month, each season I feel a palpable joy in seeing what’s blooming and shifting. I’m reminded of the beauty of nature and at the same time, the transience of all things. I feel called to be present with all of it…

My meditative garden walks also remind me that nature nurtures me and that I am a part of it all…

As I perceive that all things shift and change and that time moves ever onward, I continue to practice paying attention and savoring the moments.

Here at the Magnolia House properties, I get to create beautiful spaces, a canvas for joyful memory-making, respite, connection and soul healing….

Whether we are hosting a family reunion, a parenting retreat, a special elopement or a full on wedding, I have a clear purpose - to lovingly “hold space for (your) magic…”

Taking A Leap and Finding Purpose….✨

I’ve always told my husband, Brad, that one day I want to be in nature, in the mountains, growing some vegetables, having a space for my family to come home to, to walk in the woods, to potter around, to let nature nourish us and remind us of who we are. When 2020 brought tragedy to our family, we were shaken awake to the fact that life is short and living more simply and more connected to what and who you love is so very important.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2021, we purchased Magnolia House, amidst deep grief and the pandemic - truly a time of deep uncertainty. I am not sure that we really knew what we were doing or why we were doing it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Truthfully, Magnolia House found us in that time of grief and helped ground us and our entire extended family. It became a haven for all of us.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just as we open our doors for all of our guests to come and make wonderful memories here, we do the same for our own extended family, pulling our loved ones closer for special gatherings and celebrations.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In hind sight, I see that this historic bed and breakfast now turned vacation rental/retreat space/event venue was truly meant to find it’s way into our lives.

We feel so purposeful - to have the privilege of holding space at Magnolia House for not only our own loved ones but for yours too.
