Greenan Photo went to Turkey to take photos there. First we spent some time in Efes (Ephesus). It is a great antic side with a lot of history and incredible friendly people. Then we spent time in Istanbul. The photos will be posted shortly on greenanphoto.com

One of our last stops was Deception Island. It is a volcano crater which still shows activities. The ship sailed into the crater through a small entrance and we entered an unique landscape. After this we headed into the Drake Passage. A trip to the Antarctic is not complete without having gone through the Drake Passage, known as the roughest sea. Three oceans converge there and it is definitely an experience. Having witness the heavy sea it makes you realize what accomplishments were achieved by explorers like Shackleton.

One of the highlights on our trip in the Antarctic was the close encounter with whales. On the way to Charlotte Bay we had seen a number of whales from the Plancius. But in Charlotte Bay we got really close to them, sitting in the Zodiac as the dived below us. We also witnessed some intimate courtship behaviour between a very keen, amorous male and a female who was less than impressed with his antic, especially as her calf was with her.

On Dec 27th, 2011 we landed on the continent of Antarctica at Brown Bluff, 63˚31'S 056˚52'W. It was amazing, we had great weather. We went for a snowshoe hike as well as a zodiac ride. During the zodiac ride we got visited by 3 humpback whales. What a day!

From South Georgia we sailed for 3 days before reaching the Antarctic. On the way there we stopped in the South Orkney with a landing in Shingle Cove on Coronation Island. It was December 25th 2011 and it was snowing. The Adele Penguins which were nesting there kept to their business.

After 2 days on sea, we reached South Georgia, an island which get about 5000 human visitors a year. It is famous through Shackleton who landed at this island after his rescue mission and is also buried on the island.
The penguins are funny to watch and they are very inquisitive.

Our Antarctic Trip continued: Day 2 and 3 were spent at sea. It is a long way from the Falkland Islands to South Georgia. It was amazing how many birds were following the ship including Giant Petrels, a number of Wandering and Royal Albatross.

We landed in Mount Pleasant, Falkland Islands. It is a military airport and you are not allowed to take pictures. After clearing passport control and customs, we got on a bus. The bus took an hour to drive us to Port Stanley, the largest town in the Falklands. There we had an hour to discover the town.
Driving from the airport to the town there are still signs of the war, like mine fields which are marked and as our guide told us, everyone is pretty used to them - you just avoid them.

As mentioned to get to the Falkland Islands we had to fly from Santiago via Punta Arenas to Mount Pleasant, the airport in the Falkland Islands.
From the plane we had a great view of the Andes. Here is another photos.
The plane was pretty packed. The Falkland Islands is not an easy place to get to. The options are a commercial flight from Chile once a week or you can take a Ministry of Defence (MoD) Charter flight from the UK.

So finally we will tell you about our trip to the Antarctic. As you know we spent a lot of time planning and organizing the trip.

We flew from Houston to Santiago in Chile, where we spent two days.

From there we flew via Punta Arenas to Mount Pleasant, the airport in the Falkland Islands. From the plane we had a great view of the Andes.
