Meet the Great Horned Owl. It's roughly around 18-25" long. It has overbearing ear tufts that are responsible for its "horned" appearance. Its large stature and white throat, or "bib," separate the Great Horned Owl from others.

It is Alaska's only large owl with ear tufts. The backside of this type of owl has various shades of brown and gray, spotted with white and buff while the underside is white, barred with dark brown or black, and tinted with buff. On the other hand, the facial disk is reddish, and the eyes are a deep yellow. In-flight, these owls are recognized by their large heads, very short necks, and whitethroats.

In 1909, Huskies made an American debut in the second year of the All Alaska Sweepstakes Race. It was rumored that these canines were considered superior sled dogs. It turns out the gossip was true as they dominated racing competitions in Alaska over the following decade. In 1925, there was a widespread disease called diphtheria. The nearest antitoxin was 1,000 miles away in Anchorage. Twenty mushers and their sled dogs courageously took to the bitter cold to get the medicine there safely. You may remember this story from the animated movie Balto. You can view a statue of Balto in New York's Central Park.

Alaska is America's 49th state and undeniably one of the country's top places to visit, especially for nature's admirers. People come from all over to explore miles upon miles of lavish landscapes filled with forests, lakes, mountains, and North America's tallest peak, Denali.

A better way to see what Alaska has to offer is by visiting the national parks. To sum up, 24 sites in Alaska are connected with the National Park Service in some way, but only eight of those are considered national parks. National parks are described as areas of land delegated by the United States for preservation and conservation.

Whale watching in Alaska sure is fun and exciting, not to mention accessible too. It's only a day cruise away so you can surely find orcas, humpbacks, grays, or beluga whales.

Orcas live in the waters surrounding coastal Alaska, including outside Seward, near Kodiak, in Whittier's Prince William Sound, in Glacier Bay, Icy Strait, and Alaska's Inside Passage. Come spring, gray whales migrate through Alaska's waterways on their way to their summer feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas in the Arctic Ocean. Spot some belugas outside Anchorage in the Turnagain Arm, and humpbacks are easy to see outside of Juneau.

Totem poles are a cultural part of many indigenous people of Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and British Columbia. Totem poles are sculptures carved typically from Western Red Cedar or other large trees.

The figures on the poles are not like gods to be worshipped. The totem poles represent the traits and characteristics of each clan or story personifies. The figures found on these poles include the raven (a symbol of the Creator), the killer whale (a symbol of strength), the eagle (representing peace and friendship), the Thunderbird, the bear, the wolf, the beaver, and the frog.

It's interesting to note that totem poles are still created today, even though it's been part of history for many decades. I’d love to help you plan your trip, so be sure to pick up the phone and call me or send me an email when you’re ready to start planning.

The best way to appreciate and experience Alaska is through a scenic flight tour by a small bush plane or helicopter. It will give you a bird’s eye view of the vastness of the Alaskan landscapes and see so much visually – in such a short period.

With this tour, armed with your camera, you can photograph Alaska's mountain ranges, tundras, and lush green forests while keeping an eye out for arresting wildlife. Fly over iconic Denali National Park or take off from Anchorage and go hiking on a glacier, get on board and land at a bear viewing camp or check out Alaska's Arctic Circle from Fairbanks.

Fun facts about Iditarod:

1. Sled Dogs need 10-12,000 calories a day.
And these canines need to keep eating. Along the trail, they are given frozen snacks to eat on like chunks of meat, fish, or wet dog food.
2. The dogs wear booties.
Dog fur and an able circulatory system keep them warm, but their footpads need protection from the ice, snow, and rocky terrain.
3. Sled dogs have to study their vocabulary.
It’s a must in sled dog training to teach them a set of basic commands.

Take an Alaska railroad tour to witness an exceptional view into Alaska's backcountry "soul." Alaska railroad vacation packages and train tours bring visitors to places that can only be accessible by train, through awe-inspiring landscapes, and to some of the state's most colorful communities.

The railroad tours may be available for a single day, as an add-on to an Alaska cruise, or as part of a complete, statewide train trip itinerary of from 3 to 15 days. Train tours in Alaska can also be combined with car rentals and with bus tours to round out your Alaska travel experience. A perfect way to get away from city life!

Alaska Cruise Vacations are very flexible. You can spend 6 - 30 days depending on what you want to do and see. How much time you have and how much money you want to spend.

Commonly, Alaska cruises are seven days and are either Alaska Inside Passage Cruises or 7 Night Alaska Glacier Cruises. Many tourists usually opt to extend their Alaska cruises by adding a land tour to the beginning or end of their cruises. These "Cruise Tours" let you observe the inner cities and National
Parks of Alaska, allowing you to visit such places as Mt. Denali, Denali National Park, and Fairbanks.

If you have the time to spare and would like some sense of adventure, then a cruise is well worth it. I’d love to help you plan your trip, so be sure to pick up the phone and call me or send me an email when you’re ready to start planning.

The tall granite steeples and cold snowy summits of Denali National Park and Preserve sit atop 160 miles of the Alaska Range and exhibit so much elevation they are often lost in the clouds. Commanding this skyline is North America's highest peak; Denali ascends gloriously to 20,310 feet and is one of the most impressive sights in Alaska. Around 400,000 fearless travelers come to visit the national park yearly, basically between late May and early September. There are a lot of activities to do in the park; Hiking, camping, rafting, backcountry travel, fishing, wildlife viewing, and flightseeing. Winter activities include dog mushing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and Northern Lights viewing.
