The first of today's Instagram Stories

I have discovered Instagram Stories.
Already expecting to use them quite a bit in late December when I'm looking for gray wolves in NW Wisconsin.
Wow. Just ... wow.
Apologies for the quality of the audio. It's pretty windy here today.

Women's March on Washington Lafayette Solidarity
Lafayette, Indiana
21 January 2017
A few months ago, I mentioned here that one continuing goal for my photography business is to start making video a real part of my work. That goal’s coming along slowly, but today I had another chance to thinkfor audio/video shooting, at least a little, at the Solidarity Women’s March in Lafayette, Indiana.
I didn't feel at home with the Indpls Women's March today because the organizers of that event made it explicitly clear that people who see themselves as protesting the fascist Trump regime were not welcome in downtown Indpls today -- and I'm definitely in those organizers' disfavored class. But no such disingenuous, warm-and-fuzzy restrictions applied in nearby Lafayette, Indiana. And since there was no way I would get through today without having my feet in the street SOMEwhere to protest against Trump, I found myself in downtown Lafayette this afternoon, where skies were clear blue and temps were in the low 60s.
Organizers expected about 500 protesters at the county courthouse in Lafayette this afternoon. Early on, organizers told many of us to move closer to get out of Columbia Street, apparently because there was no permit to block that main street on the south side of the courthouse.
Pretty soon, though, you had to notice that protesters were totally blocking the street -- because the crowd had just kept growing. Police officers and sheriff's deputies went along with the reality and simply re-routed traffic to accommodate the protest rally. The final count of protesters in Lafayette was somewhere north of 1,000.
In city after city after city, hundreds of thousands of people are exercising First Amendment rights today by protesting nationwide. At what point, I have to wonder, will Trump and his voters realize that they have awakened a sleeping giant?

A gorgeous morning today at Salamonie Dam to start the new year, and the wildlife did its part, too.
About half an hour after I was set up, I had that strange sensation, a combination of hearing and feeling that is neither hearing nor feeling, that something alive was moving on the other side of the river from me. Sure enough: four whitetail does were crossing the river, upwind from me, and they waded to within about ten yards upstream from me as they crossed. Eventually had about 15 whitetail does and fawns-of-the-year come to within 20-30 yards of me from behind me, again upwind of me.
Had two cooperative immature balds working my area of the river this morning, and it was quite a show. One repeatedly perched about 50 yards downstream and repeatedly flew upstream right past me, low and within probably only 7-8 yards of me each time. The same youngster perched within about 15 yds of me once while the other youngster was perched about 30-35 yds away.
All this, and the weather was absolutely beautiful.
Hope you enjoy the short video, which ends with a heartfelt "Happy New Year" to all.
