The great enemies of competitive hot air ballooning are death and power lines. Both hovered close at the National Balloon Classic, an annual nine-day competition that’s been held in Indianola, Iowa, since 1989.

The Classic is the pinnacle of ballooning culture, bringing some of the world’s best balloon pilots to a field 17 miles south of Des Moines for a friendly contest where shared history matters more than prestige. For four sweltering days that started before the sun rose and ended with just enough time to grab six hours of sleep, I asked these pilots all the stupid questions: How does a balloon fly? (Accumulated heat from its propane fuel system keeps it airborne.) Is it a race? (No, this competition isn’t.) What do you think about this tweet? (“Can I stop the balloon? I mean, that’s a very relative term.”)

A hot-air-balloon hit a power line at the National Balloon Classic Saturday morning.

Staci Scheurenbrand, the National Balloon Classic executive director, said the accident occurred during the pre-dawn flight event around 5 a.m.

The pilot in command immediately landed the balloon after the incident. Three passengers along with the pilot were evaluated by medical staff. Scheurenbrand said no life-threatening injuries occurred.

The son of two of the passengers on the hot-air-balloon told WHO 13 Saturday evening that the pilot and his parents are in the burn unit at the University of Iowa. The son said everyone appeared to be in good spirits and are being monitored as the burns heal.

Hundreds of hot air balloons filled the Iowa sky on Saturday.

The National Balloon Classic is currently underway in Indianola – the nine-day event takes place every summer.

Pilots put on a show for spectators on the ground as they enjoy live music, and food and drinks from vendors.

And staying on the ground is optional.

Balloon rides are offered every morning and evening.

The event also featured balloon competitions where it's all about the skill of the pilots.

The FAA is currently investigating a balloon accident at the Indianola National Balloon Classic. A balloon hit a powerline early Saturday, during dawn patrol, where balloons take off before sunrise.

A witness tells KCCI that he was in his living room at about 5 a.m. Saturday when he heard a boom and saw the sky light up in front of his house. He rushed outside.

"It lit up the whole living room. The arcing from the electricity," Indianola resident Nathan Naberhaus said.

Naberhaus says his first thought was a hot air balloon hit a powerline in front of his house. What he saw when he went outside confirmed his fears when he saw flames around the basket.

"I went out there to help them. To see if they needed any help. I was worried about them hitting the powerline and severing the basket from the envelope," Naberhaus said.

The FAA is currently investigating a balloon accident at the Indianola National Balloon Classic.

The Casper Balloon Roundup is an annual hot-air ballooning event in the second-largest city in Wyoming. The area is known for Casper Mountain, a natural paradise with dense forests, a waterfall, and ski slopes. The three-day festival in late July offers plenty of fun activities and community entertainment for all ages.

The Casper Balloon Roundup has been attracting pilots and balloon crews since 2005. The festival's highlights include mass ascensions at sunrise on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. The launches take place at the Murane playing fields near Casper College. Some of the best spots to view the balloons are Casper Mountain Lookout and the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center.

On Saturday evening, the festivities move to Downtown Casper. The public has a chance to see hot air balloons up close and meet the pilots. David Street Station will host a balloon glow and various activities from 6 pm to 10 pm. Highlights include live music, food trucks, face painting, and lawn games.
