TIME for SASSAFRAS at Lake Charrette Retreat!
David here! Exploring the fall colors near Lake Charrette Retreat, I found an abundance of Sassafras Trees with gorgeous red fall foliage. Sassafras are unique in that they have THREE leaf shapes; a three lobed leaf; a simple leaf without lobes; and a mitten shaped leaf. Look closely in this picture and you will see a lot of the three-lobed leaves and just a few of the single-lobed leaves. I'm not seeing any of the mitten shaped leaves in this photo! There you have it - three leaf shapes on one tree!

Now, in late September, the Innsbrook deer have mostly shed their reddish summer coat in exchange for the darker, browner color. If you look closely, you will be able to find a few patches of the redder fur. No matter the season, I remain fascinated by their beauty and grace.
