Friday Flashback: Prior to the arrival of the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, WWI veterans were sent to the Islamorada area to help build a solid bridge system that would connect Lower Matecumbe to Big Pine Key. Pictured here are some of those veterans at one of their two camps on Lower Matecumbe lined up at the camp's mess hall. UpperKeysHistory Carrera

WE HAVE A NEWLY CERTIFIED OPEN WATER DIVER!!!!!!

Maddie said she had always loved the water and she always knew she wanted to become a diver! When the opportunity came up with a group to come to the Keys she jumped on it!!! Her Instructor Bob said she was a total natural, she was actually SO good that he questioned if she worked for PADI's compliance department... well we still haven't ruled that out 😉 luckily she was in great hands. I have no doubts we'll be seeing more from this Mermaid!!!!!

WELCOME TO THE CRD DIVING FAMILY!!!!!

Photo and story by Keith Terracina, if you follow me on my page “Key West, the way it was” you know I’ve photographing in Key West this week and working on our final edit for our book entitled the same name as this page, I spent eight years photographing in Key West back in the mid 70s and early 80s. I captured pretty much the way it was, this photo right here is New Year’s Eve 1977 that’s Mallory Square, definitely a couple thousand people celebrating the famous sunset ceremony when the sun hits the bottom of the horizon, everybody applause and then everybody’s adventures begin they were special adventures back 47 years ago, enjoy our site there is hundreds of images of the way it was with some pretty wild stories, This week I am attempting to cover the way it is these days. on that crazy island that I still love so much, Lisa and I will be at White Street pier tomorrow morning photographing sunrise , I admit I missed a bunch of them this week just a little too much partying too late at night. I’m not 50 anymore. This thing of being 68 years old is definitely slowing me down but I’ll be there tomorrow morning.

Watch sailors make a splash in homemade vessels made from plywood and duct tape in the craziest regatta you'll ever see on the waters of Key West Bight. The Minimal Regatta by Schooner Wharf Bar starts at noon on Sunday, May 26. Watch from the Historic Seaport walkways near Schooner Wharf. 😅🚣‍♀️

Cowabunga, it’s World Turtle Day!

It’s also nesting season for both freshwater and sea turtles, so show some love for our very own heroes in a half shell by following these turtle-y tubular tips (yeah, we went there):

• Spot a freshwater turtle (or a gopher tortoise) crossing the road? You can help by moving them to the other side of the road in the direction they are already heading (ONLY if it’s safe for you to do so – more tips for this can be found here: https://www.fws.gov/story/tips-helping-turtle-cross-road). *Note: if you spot a sea turtle crossing a road, they’re likely disoriented – please call our Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) for assistance.

• Give nesting turtles plenty of space to avoid disrupting the process. For sea turtles, make sure to stay at least 50 feet away.

• Beach bound? Bring all beach gear home at the end of the day to avoid entangling sea turtles and other wildlife and fill in any man-made holes in the sand before sunset. Properly stash trash whether you’re near fresh or salt water to prevent wildlife entanglements and avoid attracting predators that might eat turtle eggs.

• Help prevent the disorientation of nesting and hatchling sea turtles by turning off outside beachfront property lights when you can, closing beach-front curtains, and using natural light instead of flashlights or cell phones when on the beach at night.

• If you see a wildlife violation or if you come across a sick or injured sea turtle (or gopher tortoise), please call our Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922)

It’s World Turtle Day! Let’s celebrate our college mascot, Shel the Tuga! Shel is the face of CFK athletics and a source of collegiate spirit for students, alumni, employees, and the entire Keys community.
A strong and swift ocean navigator, the Tuga represents the culture and values at CFK. Among them is the widely shared passion for the ocean and environment. CFK’s marine-oriented programs, including our bachelor’s degree in Marine Resource Management, attract students from all over the world to study for various marine-related careers in and on the waters of the Keys. Like sea turtles in the wild, CFK student and alumni Tugas play fundamental roles in the health of coral reef, seagrass, and other ecosystems.
With powerful jaws and an armor-like shell, Tugas are formidable and tough. And while nearly all species of sea turtles are endangered, they have existed on Earth for more than 100 million years. The strength and resiliency of the Tugas’ real-life counterparts reflect the spirit and tenacity of the student body of the small island college.

Check out this update from our offshore patrol!

Our officers conducted a fisheries inspection near Dry Tortugas National Park and uncovered some fishy business. Upon approach, the subjects onboard were actively fishing on the stern of the vessel. The officers quickly observed numerous lane and yellowtail snapper lying on the deck of the vessel, with even more hidden below in the freezer hold! In total, officers discovered 334 snapper onboard (that’s 274 snapper over the limit). Officers also found 22 egg-bearing Blue Crabs and two Spiny Lobster tails, during the closed season. The subjects onboard were cited accordingly.

FRIDAY FISHING HISTORY— Today Bud N' Mary's has become a world renown fishing marina but it had very humble beginnings. Bud and Mary Stappleton came to the Keys in 1944 from New England. They knew very little about fishing but decided to develop the oceanfront property they inherited across the street from Eve Fowler's marina, restaurant and rental homes (MM 79.8). By 1950, Bud N' Mary's featured five guide boats, along with a motel and tackle shop. Bud and Mary lived in a second story apartment above the complex. Note: This picture of Bud and Mary was taken in 1949. Carrera 's
