YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK NEWS RELEASE

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yellowstone National Park's winter season begins Dec. 15, 2023

Top things for visitors to know about a winter visit

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – Yellowstone National Park’s winter season begins Friday, Dec. 15. Annually from mid-December until mid-March, visitors can travel most of the park’s roads from the West, South, East and North entrances by approved commercially guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches and via the non-commercially guided snowmobile access program.

Currently, there is limited snowfall on roads in the eastern, western and northern parts of the park. This means that visitors will be able to travel in the park, however, the type of transportation used on park roads by commercially guided snowmobile or snowcoach tour companies will depend on road conditions. Throughout the winter season, park staff will work closely with all operators and provide updates as conditions change.

Winter travel ends in mid-March when plowing crews begin to clear a winter’s worth of snow. Roads will start to re-open to automobiles in mid-April.

Top Things to Know in Winter

• Most Park Roads are Closed to Automobiles

The only roads open year-round are between the North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, and the Northeast Entrance in Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana (via Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley). Anticipate possible road closures due to quickly changing weather and dangerous driving conditions. Check the road status map before you leave. Drive cautiously and watch out for snowplows. Do not stop, stand, or walk in the road. Use a pullout if you need to stop for any reason.

• Want to See Old Faithful?

Park partners, concessioners and authorized businesses offer a variety of guided tours throughout the park during the winter months.

• Services are Limited

Most facilities are closed during winter. Check winter operating dates to see which visitor centers, stores, restaurants, lodges and warming huts are open.

• Camping and Lodging

Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel are open during winter. Make reservations as far in advance as possible. Lodging is also available in nearby communities. There are no campgrounds open for the 2023/2024 winter season.

• Prepare for Winter Conditions

Winter temperatures range from zero to 20°F (-20°C to -5°C) throughout the day. Sub-zero temperatures are common, especially at night and at higher elevations. Check current weather conditions, pack proper clothing and equipment and review winter safety tips.

• Do Not Approach or Feed Wildlife

Animals have the right of way. Expect to encounter bison and other wildlife on park roads. Slow down or pull over until they pass or move off the road. Stay 100 yards (91 m) from bears and wolves and 25 yards (23 m) from all other wildlife. The safest way to view wildlife is through a telephoto lens, a spotting scope or a pair of binoculars. Store food properly and be aware that in some areas, ravens have learned to unzip backpacks to obtain contents.

• Stay on Boardwalks

People have been severely injured or killed by breaking through thin ground in thermal basins or falling into hot springs. Exercise caution and wear traction aids over footwear when navigating snowy or icy boardwalks.

• Enhance Your Experience

Download the free National Park Service App (and offline content) before you arrive.

• Connectivity is Limited

You will likely not receive calls or texts, even in the few areas you have cell reception.

If you are planning a trip to Yellowstone before it officially closes you need to check for road closures! This time of year the entire Park could close and depending on weather it will only open if it’s safe! Call the number above for more information!

10/24/23: Dunraven is now closed and will likely be closed for the season. The East Entrance Road is also temporarily closed due to weather conditions.

Expect more road closures as we have a winter storm warning with 6 to 12" expected above 7000' and 12 to 24" above 8000'. All elevations in Montana are expecting at least 4" of snow and up to 2 feet in some areas.

We are offering 1/2 price private tours through the end of October to help folks navigate this large winter storm. This offer is good for tours from West Yellowstone only.

We know that Yellowstone's mountain roadways are not the place to learn winter driving, and we want to get our guides a few more days before the end of the season on November 1st.

You may call our office at 406-995-2399 to make a reservation. Offer good for tours this week only.

‼️The presence of quagga mussel larvae has been confirmed in the Snake River.‼️This invasive species can quickly spread and clog pipes that deliver water for drinking, energy, agriculture, recreation, and a variety of other uses. They can also kill off fish and other aquatic wildlife. Here is what you can do to help:

👉🏻If your watercraft (including kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, boats, and others) has been on the Snake River in the Centennial Park area of Twin Falls in the past 30 days, please take it to an Idaho State Department of Agriculture hot wash station in Twin Falls for proper treatment. DO NOT attempt to decontaminate watercraft yourself.

👉🏻All boat ramps and public access to the water in the Centennial Park area are closed until further notice as the investigation in the area continues. The public’s cooperation in staying out of the impacted area is crucial to the success of ISDA’s efforts.

👉🏻Anyone who owns a watercraft must be vigilant in practicing the steps of CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY.

Campground Closures
We want to thank everyone who visited the U.S. Forest Service - Caribou-Targhee National Forest, we hope you have enjoyed your stay. As the summer comes to a close, so do our campgrounds. Use the chart below to see when your favorite campsite will close for the season. Dates are subject to change depending on weather. On November 1st, most of Yellowstone National Park's roads will close for the season. The only road that is open year round is the road between the north entrance at Gardiner and the northeast entrance at Cooke City.

This means you have two months to enter through the West Gate Of Yellowstone and explore the interior of Yellowstone. Once this entrance closes, it does not open until the guided snowmobile and snowcoach season that runs December 15 through March 15.
