Rhine/Moselle River Cruise-Post #6: Day 5
The Moselle River valley is beautiful. It is a winding river through lush green vineyards. On Day 5, we toured the the quaint town of Bernkastel. There were lovely half-timbered. houses surrounding a market square. One house in particular is 600 years old and is built on an incredibly narrow base.

After touring the town, we headed to the Bergweiler Winery for a tasting of four of their wines! Tastings in Germany are quite different from my experience in Missouri. You gather in a wine cellar hundreds of years old at old wooden tables and chairs. You are served a wine and then educated about that wine before you move on to the next. It's a really cool experience.

Rhine/Moselle River Cruise-Post #5: Day 4
Day 4 began with an amazing gondola ride across the beautiful, hilly vineyards of Rudesheim. At the summit, we explored Niederwalddenkmal, a monument built in 1883 to represent the union of all Germans. The views from the summit were amazing!

After riding the gondola back into the village, we went to a wine tasting at Bassenheimer Hof. Their specialty, of course, was Riesling wines. We also learned of the famed "ice wine" and how it is made-pretty fascinating.

After leaving this beautiful, and typical, German Rhine village, we sailed the famous Rhine Gorge. We saw more than 30 castles in a pretty short stretch of river valley. It has more castles than anywhere else in the world!! There were so many, it was hard to get good pics of all of them. We sat on the top deck, watching castles go by, and felt like we were in a fairy tale!!

Rhine/Moselle River Cruise: Post #4-Day 3
First, we docked in Ludwigshafen, Germany- We chose the excursion to visit the Mannheim Baroque Palace. It is one of the largest palaces in Europe. While it was damaged during WWII, it was rebuilt and has priceless paintings, ornate furniture and tapestries inside.

After visiting the palace, we strolled around the city enjoying the park and visiting a bakery for a slice of delicious Black Forest Cake!

After leaving Ludwigshafen, we sailed to Rudesheim, where we had an evening excursion to a nearby tavern to have a Rudesheim coffee (coffee, brandy, whipped cream, chocolate)! The village was bustling with activity and quite beautiful. We spent the night on our ship and explored more of the town the next day!

Rhine/Moselle River Cruise-Post #3-Day 2
Our second stop was in Strasbourg, France. It is considered the "gem of the Alsace" region of France. It is the where the parliament of the European Union resides as well. It was another day exploring medieval half-timbered houses and the Cathedral de Notre Dame (Strasbourg Cathedral). It is a Gothic wonder that looks majestically over the city.

Rhine/Moselle River Cruise-Post #2: The Beginning
Our journey began with a flight from St. Louis to Detroit. After a short layover, with no delays, we boarded our plane to Amsterdam. We flew Delta and booked Premium Plus seats, that was a great decision. We had a very comfortable trip to Amsterdam. After another short layover, with no delays, we boarded our much smaller plan to Basel, Switzerland. Upon arriving at the Basel airport and retrieving our bags, we were greeted by a driver who had been sent by Amawaterways to take us to our ship. So incredibly easy!! We were grateful because we were tired and not having the stress of finding a way to the port was lovely. As soon as we arrived at the port, even though it was before lunch, they took our bags and welcomed us on the ship. We were allowed to wait in the lounge and have lunch and/ or go explore. We did both! In late afternoon, we had a sail-away cocktail hour and our journey began.

Meals on a river cruise are amazing! They are elegant yet relaxed. The food is delicious and the service is awesome. Did I eat too much? Yes!! But that is on me. They always have multiple choices at meals and if you want to eat healthy, it's easy. I wanted to eat croissants😄!

We had a wonderful night's sleep and woke up ready to take on our first adventure. We docked in Breisach, Germany. George and I chose to explore Riquewihr, France, which was just across the river. The Alsace region of France is beautiful with rolling vineyards and beautiful villages that managed not to be bombed during WWII. Riquewihr was a step back in time. It was built in the 1500's and has retained medieval charm.

Storks are common, revered, and protected in this area (check out the nest). I felt like I was walking through the village in Beauty and the Beast. I also ate the best pain au chocolat of my life!!

River cruising! Is it for you? Let's talk about it!! We just returned from a 10 night cruise of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. In those ten days, I was in four different countries (Switzerland, France, Germany, Netherlands) and had experiences that I have never had before!

River cruising and ocean cruising are two different animals. Two animals that I really enjoy!! River cruising is an intimate experience. On our ship there were 75 passengers and 50 crew. Many river cruises will have between 100 and 200 passengers. This sailing just happened to be at 50% capacity.

On a river cruise, you have the opportunity to get to know your fellow passengers if you want to. The staterooms are similar to ocean cruising. I love the idea of unpacking once and seeing so many different places!!
