Hold on to your hats racing fans! This weeks THROW BACK THURSDAY takes us to the month of August in the early days of Outpost Farm & Garden (now Ruch Hardware). How many of you remember these rowdy races? The 4-H club used to make money renting bullfrogs. Too much fun!

It's THROW BACK THURSDAY! Here's a good one. Does anyone remember this guy? This picture was taken in 1972 when he worked in the Ryan's Outpost grocery store. He was hilarious! I remember when out-of-town folks would come in and ask if this was Ruch (like it's spelled, not like it sounds) and his answer was always "nope!". He had the same response when he was visiting with my grandparents and they had to yell at him so he could hear. My grandma asked him if he had is hearing aides turned on and he said "nope!" He was quite a character! Luckily, we seem to attract them here. Hope you enjoy!

It's THROW BACK THURSDAY! Here's an oldie but goodie. This is Ruch Natural Foods (fondly known as the hippie store) in the mid-80's. Man, wouldn't it be nice to have the gas station back! Also, that's the original bridge to cross the road. This bridge was there from the 50s until about 2010 when a car took it out. Once rebuilt, it lasted another couple years and was wiped out again! Notice the "Casper the ghost" trailer behind the store, where the new hardware building is now. That trailer was moved from the trailer park, cleaned and repainted. That was where my mom spent all her time doing books when the family ran Ryan's Outpost. Ahhhh....memories! I'm sure lots of you remember this look for Ryan's Outpost.

It's THROWBACK THURSDAY! This is a picture was taken in 1975 of Susan Raye and my first dog, Pup at a house on Hamilton Road. I think the house is still there, but there's a 6 ft wooden fence around it now. Susan came here to film the song "What Ya Gonna Do With a Dog Like That" for Hee Haw (if I remember correctly). She needed a dog for the clip, so we volunteered Pup. I don't know how many of you remember Pup, but he was half collie and half basset hound, so he looked a lot like a corgie. He was the car-chasin'ist dog I've ever seen...man, could those short little legs move! I remember him chasing a car on Upper Applegate toward Hamilton Rd. When the car got out of his reach, he started to cross the road back to us and a car coming the other way hit him. He was laying in the middle of the road and I yelled at him "Pup, get up!" and he did! Unfortunately, he ended up dying in our fire in 1979. I sure loved that dog!

It's THROW BACK THURSDAY! This puts things in perspective...here's and invoice from 1978 for Levi's purchased by Ryan's Outpost to sell in the store. Wholesale price is $8.25...for the made-in-America, last-for-years Levi's! You can't even buy a bag of chips for that anymore.

It's THROWBACK THURSDAY! Here is another picture appropriate for the season. This is the fire truck the first volunteer fire department of Ruch got after they sent back the first truck that had bulging tires (see earlier post). Notice the lack of cab and windshield...this made for some interesting travel. Drivers had to wear face shields while driving to avoid bugs in the teeth! I left my doll on this truck one time (yes, I actually had one). They got a call that night and my dad and the truck had retardant dropped on them. My dad recovered, but Baby Tenderlove was never the same! The driver here is my Grandpa Tony with my cousins Travis and Shannon. I bet a few of you remember this truck, too! Enjoy!

Here's a cool THROW BACK THURSDAY photo! It brings back lots of memories for me. This is Straube's cabin at Maple Dell Gap near Dutchman Peak. We spent lots of time here rounding up cattle with Fred and Kay Straube and family when I was growing up. I think the cabin is still there, but people sure don't care about stuff like they used to and I know it's been vandalized numerous times. When I was a kid, we just had to make repairs when the bears broke in to drink the dish soap! I know there's a few of you out there that have fond memories of this place, too. We'd love to hear them!
