There is an old deep magic in these woods which has seeped into my bones.

Update: The electricity is back on at the park and the phones are working. Main roads are passable but some park and state forest roads are still closed.. Trails continue to be dangerous due to icy surfaces and large falling limbs and ice.

Who's crossed this suspension bridge at Pickett Civilian Conservation Corps Memorial State Park?

Visitors at Pickett CCC Memorial State Park can drive down to the picnic area where this bridge is found. Across this bridge, you'll find the Lake Trail that's just over 1.5 miles. The trail follows the perimeter of the beautiful waters and shows off the park's incredible plant life and spectacular rock formations. Cabin guests can take a short trail through the woods to arrive at the bridge for a full day's worth of exploring.

"....to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." - Organic Act of 1916

Today, national parks all over the country are celebrating the National Park Service birthday but we here at Big South Fork are also celebrating our own anniversary. What are some of your favorite NPS sites not named Big South Fork?

After the Army Corps of Engineers built many of the recreation areas and resources we now enjoy, the Big South Fork was transferred to the National Park Service on August 25th, 1991.

Today, we celebrate 104 years of preserving public lands and our Nation’s history and 29 years of preserving the Big South Fork. Go Big and explore this beautiful park but don’t forget about all the other amazing places the National Park Service takes care of.
