On this date in 1837, a fire destroyed the Missouri State Capitol building. The structure was the city's first capitol building after the seat of government moved from St. Charles in 1826.

It was replaced by a new building, pictured here in the 1860s. The second capitol was constructed in 1840 and stood until February 5, 1911, when a bolt of lightning struck the dome.

We are proud to celebrate two members of our JCCVB team!

Diane Gillespie and Alex Bobbitt were honored at the Governor's Conference on Tourism, hosted by the Missouri Division of Tourism (Visit Missouri). Award recipients are nominated by their peers for exemplary customer service, initiative, and a positive influence on the tourism industry.

Alex received the Rising Star Award, which honors an individual who has worked for an organization for less than five years and made significant advancements to their organization’s efforts. As the JCCVB’s Communications and Film Manager, Bobbitt has enhanced tourists’ positive perception of Jefferson City by developing a refreshed visual identity. She spearheaded efforts to develop a new visitor's guide, an engaging and resourceful website, and several promotional videos highlighting all the city has to offer. Bobbitt has also worked closely with multiple film productions at the Missouri State Penitentiary to increase exposure to both the city and the historic site.

Diane received the Missouri Tourism Hall of Fame Award, which is presented to an individual whose contributions have significantly and measurably impacted tourism in Missouri. As Executive Director of the JCCVB, Gillespie has played an integral part in a multitude of development projects, including the Bicentennial Bridge, the Special Olympics Missouri Training for Life Campus, the MSP redevelopment, and the future hotel and conference center. She is also an active volunteer in the planning and ex*****on of community events such as the annual Salute to America celebration, the 2017 Capital Eclipse, and many more. Diane is an impeccable director as she leads the JCCVB team to maximize the positive impact of visitor dollars on the community through the promotion of Jefferson City as a desirable tourism destination.
