It's an important day in Missouri State Penitentiary history. 🗝️

Prior to statehood, crime and punishment was handled as a local issue in Missouri. As the population grew, however, so did the need for a State prison. in 1833, a law was approved for the creation of a commission to “procure plans for a jail and penitentiary house at Jefferson City”. A budget of $25,000 was appropriated for construction (over $900,000 today).

The prison, at that time a four-acre plot of land with a few small buildings enclosed by a wooden stockade, was completed March 1, 1836. The prison was staffed by one guard and one warden, and could house forty inmates. The first, Wilson Eidson, arrived a week later on March 8.

A portion of Eidson’s record in the Numerical Register is shown here from our Missouri State Penitentiary Database. This database indexes inmates received by MSP between 1836-1931 and can be accessed here: https://s1.sos.mo.gov/records/archives/archivesdb/msp/Default.aspx

Eidson was tried in Greene County for grand larceny after stealing from Junius T. Campbell’s grocery store. Sentenced to two years and 45 days in the penitentiary, he was ultimately discharged December 21, 1837.

Here’s how growth helps everyone:
• New jobs and business opportunities
• Increased funding for public services (like police and firefighters) and infrastructure (like roads and bridges)
• A stronger, more vibrant community

Travel plays an essential role in communities across every industry and the economy through leisure and business travel. Dollars spent by visitors ripple through the community, supporting restaurants, businesses, and hotels.

The impact doesn’t stop there, though. Those visitor dollars support employees, food and beverage vendors, maintenance workers, electricians, and many others. Economic growth and tourism support our local economy.💡

🌊 “The Ripple Effect of a Dollar”
Bringing money into our community allows us to support more businesses and neighbors. Dollars spent by visitors can ripple through the community in countless ways:
• Dining → supports restaurants
• Shopping → boosts local businesses
• Hotels → creates jobs for residents
The impact doesn’t stop there, though. Those visitor dollars support employees, food and beverage vendors, maintenance workers, electricians, and so many others. These ripples touch everyone in ways we might not even realize.
Supporting economic growth and tourism supports our local economy.💡
