The Wichita Fire Department and the City of Wichita are extremely saddened to announce that at approximately 3:22 PM while operating at a mutual aid fire in Haysville, one of Wichita’s bravest was injured in the line of duty, and later succumbed to their injury.

The Wichita Fire Department is working to ensure family members are all appropriately notified. We will not release the name of this firefighter until then. We respectfully ask the same of anyone that may know the firefighter.

This is a loss that deeply weighs heavily on all of us. All of the dedicated individuals who serve our fire department do so knowing the immense risk they are undertaking and do it with noble, selfless regard. It does not make their sacrifice any less immense. Nor the sacrifice of their loved ones and family any easier.

Please keep this firefighters family and crew in your prayers. We will update the community on any additional information as it becomes available.

All 3 Academy Class 23-1 graduates just finished their Probationary year and received a new leather helmet that will stay with them throughout their career

Each crew pitches in to customize their new Firefighters helmet with Tetrahedron’s, extended chin straps, better padding, etc.

July 5th, 12 Recruits graduated Academy Class 24-1

7 of those became full-time, Probationary Firefighters for the City of Jenks

5 of those Recruits, participated as a volunteer and completed one of the most grueling Academy’s in the country. All of them obtained the certifications to be a Firefighter in the state of Oklahoma, and will continue to serve the community of Jenks voluntarily.

10 weeks of 100% dedication to the job

25 years of 110% dedication to the job remains

We wish all of the Recruits the best of luck in their careers, and hope they continue to hone their craft to provide the best service to the citizens they serve

Yesterday we were able to donate 629 lbs. of food to the Jenks Community Food Bank

This is an annual food drive that every shift takes part in. We are grateful to the Citizens of Jenks for helping donate so much this year. Every last can/box/jar will go to a family in need.

Today was our Ground Breaking Ceremony for the construction of new Station 1

Old Station 1 has been out of service for the last year, and today was a huge step forward in the process of us moving into our new home

The Recruits are currently on Week 9 of their 10 Week journey to being put on shift as Probationary FireFighters

There will not be a video for every week of the Academy, as we near the end the Recruits begin testing for certifications and spend more time in the classroom

We will be accepting donations at the Neighborhood Walmart located at 111th and Elm Today, and Tomorrow from 8:00am until 2:00pm.

We also have set up a drop box at Station 2 (1115 W 121st St S) this year incase you miss us ! Station 2’s drop box will be open until the end of July.

Academy 24-1 had the privilege of experiencing live fire today for the very first time

Huge thanks to Owasso Fire Department for allowing us to use their facility time and time again

Also huge thanks to Claremore Fire Department & Berryhill Fire Protection District for participating and assisting with the setup, cleanup, and general operation of the evolutions

This was a huge group effort and a great reminder of how important our community in the Fire Service is to us

Academy Class 24-1 Week 3 is complete

Today, the Recruits were familiarized with one of the most important pieces of equipment we use daily, SCBA’s.

From breathing techniques, to MAYDAY procedures, to packaging and rescuing a fallen brother. Most of the day was focused on RIT, and how vital it is that we are prepared to not only save citizens, but each other.

The Denver Drill is a well known training evolution, modeled after an incident that occurred in Denver, Colorado on September 28th, 1992. Firefighter Mark Langvardt was completing a search on the second division of a commerical structure fire. Mark was separated from his Truck mate during the search, and found himself stuck in a confined space with high window sills (unable to self extricate). 55 minutes passed from the time that rescue attempts were started, to the time he was removed from
the structure. Firefighter Mark Langvardt was transported to the hospital and sadly, succumbed to his injuries (CO poisoning).

This drill has a lot of meaning in the Fire Service, and carries with it a heavy reminder that we must be prepared for anything.

The training continues, as Week 4 will introduce even more depth to the best job in the world.

Week 2 of Academy 24-1 is a wrap

Today was all about our bread and butter, search and rescue. We utilized old Station 1 (out of service) to provide as realistic of an experience as possible. Low visibility, lot’s of noise, and plenty of clutter.

This week’s Academy video will be posted on Monday, and will showcase how much work these Recruits have already put out.

Class 24-1 had a busy day today. Jenks has a number of considerations in our response districts for Rope rescue. Proficiency is the goal, and 24-1 is on track to perform. These Recruits are nearing the end of Week 2, and tomorrow will bring many new challenges continuing to test their aptitude.

Huge thanks to Glenpool Fire Department for continuously allowing us to use their facility for training. Academy Class 24-1 spent the day using their 4 story tower to learn standpipe operations, up-grade, and down-grade hose advancement.
