Happy Fangtastic Friday! Our chocolate tarantula molted this week, prompting us to learn a little more about this incredible Arkansan spider.🕷🕸 All tarantulas have an exoskeleton, and in order to grow larger, they form a new exoskeleton and shed their old, smaller coverings in a process known as molting. We captured about half of this process, which took over three hours! The tarantula begins by creating a lubricating layer between the two exoskeletons, including her fangs and eyes. 👀 The tarantula then contracts it’s abdomen, which pushes fluid into its upper body until the fluid “pops” off the top of the old exoskeleton (heck of an ab workout, don’t you think?). The tarantula then lies on its side to wriggle out its new legs. After pulling its legs out of the exoskeleton, the tarantula lies on its back while stretching out its legs, and slowly turns over to continue on its merry way. Tarantulas are very vulnerable during this process, and its new exoskeleton will remain soft for a few more hours. A tarantula may undergo this process many times during its lifetime. On your next trip to the nature center, be sure to stop by the discovery room and see this tarantula’s new exoskeleton!
