This afternoon, we were immensely grateful to welcome the Government of Canada’s announcement of more than $2.5 million in funding for UJA’s Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre, to be opened in spring 2023. Renting a Home in the UK After the six-month sponsorship period you may need alternative accommodation for you and your family. What do you need to know about renting a home? ▪️To start, you must prove that you are eligible to rent property in England. You will be able to use a residence permit (BRP) as proof of your immigration status in the UK, including the right to rent in England. To digitally confirm your status as a landlord or rental agent in the UK, you can use the online service: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-rent ▪️You can find the property through local rental agents and property listing websites. Agents will conduct a statutory check if they deem necessary before accepting you as a new tenant. This may include income requirements or the need for a guarantor, depending on the decision of an individual landlord. If providing references prove difficult for you, it is recommended to discuss your personal circumstances with a leasing agent or landlord about alternative forms of recommendations that may be acceptable. ▪️When you find a house or apartment, you will probably have to make a deposit. Then you will need to sign a rental agreement - it is a legal agreement between you and the landlord. Your rental agreement will specify how much rent is due and how often, a list of repairs and maintenance that are your responsibilities and what are the landlord's responsibilities, and any other rules or restrictions, such as the restriction on smoking. ▪️ Rent is usually for a fixed period of 6 or 12 months. The landlord must allow you to stay in the property for at least six months. If you prefer a longer initial fixed term, you can ask if the landlord wants to agree to that. You will be required to pay rent for the period of rent. ▪️Municipal Tax If you move from sponsored housing to a private rented property or own home, you are responsible for paying municipal tax.
