Couple quick well deserved promotions this evening. Congratulations!
Special big thanks to my training partner, Sifu Bernie, for always helping and supporting me with my other certification courses. Without my Assistant Instructors none of this could be possible. Thank you all for the continuing support 🤙🏼

It’s been little over a year finally completed Burton Richardson’s Battlefield Kali Sword Course. Levels 1-4 was a mindset that had to be learned. Today’s Instructor Certification Test was very challenging! I would like to thank my training assistant Sifu Bernie and his daughter Sibak Rheean for video recording all the requirements.
Keep on Training 👊🏼

And the FKJ backyard training continues!
Stationary bag striking and kicking combinations. Followed by some single stick combos working the left and right hand. Finished off with our punch counter and grab art techniques. I often take notice that a lot of the Kajukenbo techniques have Filipino and Hawaiian Lua techniques within the system.
A hybrid blend.

Just found out that one of Hawaii’s great martial artist passed away today. Shihan Kenneth Funakoshi may he rest in peace. He was my first martial arts instructor at age 6. Till today I show my students what he taught to me. Shihan Kenneth has two great son’s Kevin and Kyle that will keep the flame burning strong for him.
I can still remember him walking around in class carrying that bamboo stick and using it when necessary. My parents would take me to tournaments where Shihan Kenneth would win the grand championship in both the Kata and Kumite events. He was a 3rd degree Kajukenbo black belt before breaking away and carrying on his family’s lineage of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate.
May God Bless the Ohana! Osu!
When the mats come out the students know it’s time to become FKJ Grapplers. It was ground grappling tonight going over the main dominant body positions. Mounted, guarded, side control and rear mount. Some attacks and escapes from each position. Then ending the training session with a quick promotion for my pretty niece, Anela, to senior brown belt. Congratulations! One step closer to that Kajukenbo black belt.
Keep on Training 👊🏼

A special training session from 430-630pm today with Sensei Richard. He is one of Kevin Funakoshi’s Black Belts. FKJ’s Kajukenbo Brown Belt, Rhylan, went through a sparring practice with a few national rank students. He gained so much knowledge and experience in just 1 session. Special thanks and much respect to all of Sensei Richard’s students who helped out today.
Thank you so much for the invite!
Keep on Training 👊🏼

One of my personal goals was to achieve the highest rank as a military enlisted man, E9 Sergeant Major. Check - achieved.
Another personal goal was to achieve the highest rank as a martial artist, 9th degree black belt Grandmaster. Check - achieved.
Then get a Dragon and Tiger tattoo like Cain aka Grasshopper from the TV series Kung Fu 😂 Check - achieved.

Some Ground Grappling training for the Kajukenbo students this evening. Need to also know the basics from the 4 dominant body positions. Mounted, Guarded, Side Control and Rear Mount. A handful of Escapes and Attacks from each position is required.
Another Rotation or Punch Counter. Those tested will first demonstrate slow speed then normal speed.
Labor Day. Going over some techniques. Couple of the Brown Belts will soon test for Senior Brown Belt rank.
Great FMA seminar with Jonathan and Nick last night at the Papakolea BJJ studio. Owner is Kaleo. Nick is the owner of Kombat Instruments Unlimited. I purchase almost all my stick fighting gear from that website. Guro Jonathan was going over a drill using the Largo Mano method. Largo Mano translates to the Long Hand or Long Rang. Timing, body position, and distance is crucial. The key to Largo Mano is the foot work.
FKJ Kali Assistant Instructor, Bernie and I going at it for couple rounds. Keep on telling ourselves that it’s a sword in our hands not a stick. Takes discipline! Keep on Practicing 👊🏼 SPIRIT MIND BODY 🐉♣️🐅
Gasping for some air after the uphill walk. Then making our way deep into the forest. Couldn’t even talk straight 😂 Anyway, it was great to be with my Escrima brother Kim! We went, we found, we harvested, we skinned’um. I forgot how hard it is to find that certain thickness and the straight ones. Now, time to dry and then the sanding begins. Lot of work! Some dude out there in Lala land is selling’um for $200-$300 a stick…and it’s not even straight! Crazy right! Strawberry guava very strong wood. Used for Filipino Martial Arts Escrima, Kali, Arnis training weapons.
Made things a little bit more challenging. Punching combination #1,2,3,6 and 7. Followed by a right then left side kick. Ending with a back kick. Finish with a front roll while picking up the stick. Turn and face followed by swinging #1,2and 5. Through continuous perfect practice it will get perfect.
Working the mitts with the white belts nice and easy. First time during practice this evening. They will get better in time!
Approaching another beautiful evening out here Kapolei. Practicing some Kajukenbo Chu’an Fa Kung-Fu. The beginning of the form is SGM Sifu Al Dela Cruz Form #3 and the ending is Form #4. Being creative and added some extra movements here and there. Good exercise. Keep on Training 🐉♣️🐅
If it wasn’t for LKK the Hawaii island wouldn’t even have one single Open Kenpo-Karate tournament during the year. Takes a lot of coordination, planning and support. Before the covid pandemic you would see double the amount of participants. Things are getting more expensive to participate in a martial arts program. On an average they now charge $30 per event. Do the math. If you have multiple events with multiple students it will cost you. When a martial arts club flies in from the mainland or outer islands like Maui you know they spent some money. So in return, the participants that win are looking for a pretty decent trophy or medal. Let’s just hope things don’t get worse with our economy. Till the next one…Keep on Training!
