Did you know that approximately ~25% of Kalaupapa National Historical Park’s total area is underwater?! To monitor the important resources protected within park waters the park’s marine team uses the park boat named Kala 2 in remote sites along the peninsula. It allows our team to conduct scuba and snorkel surveys of our special corals that have shown signs of being more climate resilient than other sites and also to monitor our fish populations, one of the highest fish biomass areas in the main Hawaiian islands.

Due to large winter swells and storms, the park’s marine team stores the Kala 2 on topside Molokai, and when the right window opens up, the boat motors approximately 30 miles from the Kaunakakai Harbor to the Kalaupapa Wharf for the marine monitoring season! Last week, the marine team safely returned the KALA 2 to Kalaupapa spotting ono (wahoo), mālolo (flying fish), honu (green sea turtles), and a hāhālua (manta ray)!

Get ready to follow along with the marine team for an exciting and important field season, starting off this week when scientists from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the DLNR Department of Aquatic Resources (DAR) return to Kalaupapa to continue their collaboration with the National Park Service to better understand lobster populations around the peninsula.

Red-tailed Tropicbird: Also known as; (Phaethon rubricauda) It's Hawaiian Name is: Koa‘e‘ula. These along with its white tailed cousins can be found along the northern sea-cliffs of our island. This one is capture in the midst of it's mating dance.
