Field trips include visits to Bill Baggs State Park and the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on Virginia Key. Each camp session is 5 days long and is open to children 8 to 14 years old. Online marine biology classes ae also available.

Thank you to Linda, her daughter, and the staff at the Dolphin Reseach Center in Grassy Key for once again providing an exceptional program for the campers. The girl in the photo enjoyed interacting with the dolphins, but since she also has a keen interest in reptiles, she was just as excited to see the rare Madagascar giant day geckos that also live on the Reseach Center property.

We went looking for crocodiles today as part of Marine Biology Camp Day 4. We came across one that was being escorted to the water by a flock of Ibises. It shouldn't surprise anyone that these birds don't seem to fear crocodiles, considering that they're the last sign of wildlife to take shelter before a hurricane (and the first to reappear after the storm).

Come join me in the Florida Keys for another Keys Marine Biology Camp the week of August 5-9. This photo was taken at last summer's camp when 15 campers from across the country joined me for a week of marine biology field trips in the fabulous Florida Keys.

Thank you to the Village of Key Biscayne for issuing a permit to Marine Biology Camp allowing us to fish on the Mashta Bridge as part of our traditional Friday fish tagging day. Thank you also to the Key Biscayne police officers who come out to help us with traffic control on the bridge while the kids are fishing. On Friday, we saw more manatees and we tagged and released a 12" mangrove snapper.

Thank you to the Key Biscayne police officers who for the second year in a row have offered to come out to our fishing location to assist with our fish tagging program. One of the many advantages of having them there occurred when 3 manatees suddenly appeared on one side of the bridge last Friday. The police officers were able to pause the traffic on the bridge for a few seconds so that the kids on one side of the bridge could quickly and safely cross to the other side to join their fellow campers and see the manatees up close.

When parents of some former Marine Biology Campers asked me recently if I could organize a one-day Everglades field trip for their kids, I told them that I'd be happy to make it happen. When I was a college professor, aside from teaching marine biology and oceanography courses, I also taught ecology to the students majoring in marine biology. Today I returned to the Everglades with some younger students where I included an airboat ride as part of the trip. It was a fun and educational day, so I hope to do more of these trips in the future.

Thank you to Key Biscayne's Islander news for mentioning my camp on the front page of today's paper. Although some of the quotes weren't completely accurate, I very much appreciate the inclusion of my camp in the story (and in the special camp guide). And yes, I got my start as a DJ when I had to fill in for a radio DJ who missed his late-night shift when as a UM student, I chaired a 45-hour dance marathon to raise money to help fight Multiple Sclerosis. The radio DJ from the previous shift showed me what to do and as they say, "the rest is history".

The video shot by former marine biology camper Abie Raymond of a gray whale that Michael Hunt and I identified for NBC 6 last December after it was spotted off of Miami Beach, was used in this NBC News story with Jeff Corwin. Michael is a friend of mine and former marine biology student, who I believe at one time worked with Corwin at the Georgia Aquarium.
