Maui Traffic Jam, Turtle-style
Basking is a behavior unique to Hawaiสปi where green turtles deliberately crawl out of the water to rest and warm up on the beach. There are a few theories as to why, but scientists believe basking has to do with thermal regulation, which may also aid in digestion. What is interesting is that not all Hawaiสปi honu bask on the beachโsome also bask by floating at the surface of the water. Research suggests there is a correlation between basking behavior and the oceanโs sea surface temperature, which supports the thermo-regulation theory.

๐ What is a lava tube?
As islands created by volcanoes, Hawaiสปi is criss-crossed by countless lava tubes. These underground passageways, also known as pyroducts, are formed by lava flows themselves and are capable of transporting vast quantities of lava over long distances beneath the surface. ๐๐ฅ
When the supply of lava stops at the end of an eruption ๐, or if it gets diverted elsewhere, it leaves behind an empty cave. ๐
When a lava tube is active, lava flows along its floor at temperatures exceeding 2,000ยบ F (1090ยบ C). ๐ก๏ธ Winds of superheated fume ๐ฌ๏ธ may blast through the tunnel, yet the only sound might be the constant soft hiss of the relentless flow. ๐ฅโจ

Green sea turtles are recovering from overharvesting, ocean pollution ๐, and the loss of nesting sites to rising seas ๐, though theyโre not in the clear yet.
