In my 18 years as a résumé writer, professional branding expert, and career coach, I feel most blessed for the long-term relationships that I have developed with my repeat clients, who have trusted me to tell their professional stories.

I am so touched by all of the testimonials and recommendations my clients have given me - it takes time and thought. For some clients, it's not easy to admit there was someone "behind the curtain."

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” ~ George Santayana

I finally finished Atlas Shrugged last month. It had been recommended by enough people that it continued to move up my reading list. My biggest takeaway was that if a country regulates industry enough, innovation and motivation by “the thinkers” and producers become casualties, leaving only “the looters” to run everything into the ground. People suffer. People die.

That is a valid point, but in making the industrialists the protagonists, Ayn Rand fails to acknowledge that industrialists and looters both have a human tendency toward greed that drives them to profit at the expense of others and the planet. It was this greed that caused the conditions that led to the advent of Labor Day, and that are contributing in our present day to a disproportionate distribution of wealth that is strangling the middle class with devastating impacts to the economy at-large, yet again.

As Canada narrowly averted a rail strike yesterday that threatened the supply chain of the continent, port workers of the Gulf and East Coast face a contract expiration in October that, if it leads to strikes, consumers would most certainly feel in terms of increase costs and delivery delays while 2/3s of Americans already live paycheck to paycheck and 40% don’t even make a living wage.

Will it take another Great Depression to correct this trend? Hopefully not. This is certainly something at stake in this presidential election.

Certainly, we want to celebrate the efforts of the workforce and enjoy the holiday weekend. Keep in mind, however, that Labor Day was a reconciliatory gesture by a President who turned the government against workers and caused the death of 30 people.

I don’t share this to dampen your weekend. I do this to urge you to look out for yourself and each other. Don’t just look - ACT. Advocate for better pay and conditions. Advocating for yourself helps carve a deeper, easier path for those who follow you, and then there is more power in greater numbers. Hold leaders accountable. Organize. It is your right and has been since 1935, thanks to the Wagner Act written by Senator Robert F. Wagner, a German immigrant.

Thank you to the workers who helped us build modern America and who will transition us toward the future. Thank you to the people who have protected them from greed and harm thus far. Thank you to all who have and will continue to look out for workers, especially advocates and leaders who push for labor-friendly policies.
