FAQ
So we spent all of our money on a rental car and flying here, we need to eat cheaply. How do we do that?
This is a great question and there are lots of answers. We were in Maui April 2024 with family and had 6 people to feed. Going to a restaurant is barely feasible with 2 young children so here is what we did to feed all 6 of us and have leftovers the next day.
Spaghetti dinner: everything bought from the Times super market a mile down the road.
Spaghetti sauce; 2 jars for $7.
Meat; 2 pounds of extra lean burger for $11 and 1 pound of pork sausage for $3.50.
Cans of tomato sauce: $4
2 boxes of spaghetti noodles @ 1.79 a piece: $3.80
Loaf of French bread: $3.29 plus $1.00 of butter and garlic
Maui pineapple @ $1.79 a lb: $5.00
Total: $34 to feed 6 people dinner and enough left overs for lunch the next day. Probably couldn’t do much better at home.
Could we have done better by planning ahead at Costco? Probably could have saved a few dollars by buying at Costco but we have often made the mistake of over-buying at Costco as well and waste can be expensive. We don’t want to be too regimented on our food but planning ahead and buying at Costco can make the overall food expense similar to what it might be at home.
Bread and produce are the most expensive items in Maui so buying at Costco when you arrive can save you money but we like to spend local as well so a couple of well timed trips to the farmer’s market right down the road can keep us loaded with fresh produce while giving money back to the locals.
