The ancient Hawaiians built many spectacular structures. Massive stone temples, terraces that diverted water, and they even walled off entire sections of beach to make fish farms. What’s even more impressive was the fact that they were capable of doing this without cement, iron tools, or even written blueprints.

This structure is known as a Hale Hālāwai, or meeting house. The Hale Hālāwai were the equivalent to town halls or community centers. When you visit Kīpahulu, it is important to remember that this is a place where people lived and prayed, and the many stone structures you pass by are sacred reminders of a time long past.
