Is it a an X-File? Scooby-Doo, where are you? Also, known as the Brown Mountain Lights. Some people say they look like fireworks coming off the mountain-top or hovering orbs of bright lights.

The drive to Wiseman's View in the Linville Gorge which has the best view of Brown Mountain is only 55 miles from Raven's Rest Cabin.

This looks really fun & tasty, and it is only 15-25 miles away from our front door. More importantly, Raven's Rest Cabin has availability that weekend too.

Also, you could informally add Fae Nectar, Burntshirt Vineyards Tasting Room & Bistro - Chimney Rock, Chimney Rock Brewing, and Parker-Binns Vineyard and Winery since they are in the area.

Drovers, huh? Running from Fairview, Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, Ravens Rest Cabin and Rutherfordton along US 74A, this Scenic Byway was once used by “drovers,” or early mountain settlers who herded their flocks and livestock to markets. This was a decade before Lake Lure and the dam even existed. If 74A feels like a goat trail when you drive it, well, it is literally is an old goat trail. It took travelers along the Broad River through Hickory Nut Gorge, over the continental divide and then meets up with the big drover's trail called the Buncombe Turnpike in downtown Asheville. The efficiency of steam trains eventually ended the drover's way of life.

PRO-Tip: Make a stop at the Sherrill's Inn at Hickory Nut Gap near Hickory Nut Gap Farm. It was a Stagecoach Stop, Tavern, Inn, and even a place to get food and water for your weary pigs and ducks. It has hosted two President's and it was even taken over by the Union Army during the Civil War. Today, it is a lovely wedding and event venue - http://sherrillsinn.com

Yes, it is true that the "big" lake will be lowered this winter but did you know our little Mirror Lakes in the Riverbend Community are unaffected by this drawdown project? Come visit our little gem of lake, river, beach, nature walk, and waterfall but don't tell the big lake people. Come get you some this winter.

DYK there is llama and Alpaca Farm just 12 -13 miles from Raven's Rest Cabin - Lake Lure. Appointment for a tour is required.

Ellaberry Llama Farm is in Apple and Wine Country on the way to Hendersonville so you can combo the visit. I love reading the profiles and the handsome pictures of the Llamas on the webpage. Too cute!
