Did you know that you can grow an entirely new prickly pear cactus from one pad? This is a spineless prickly pear, which does not have the visible "thorns" found on all other prickly pears. They do, however, have "goclids" which are microscopic needles. These will get into your skin and cause severe irritation. Never touch any cactus without wearing leather gloves or using tongs.

We have several species of prickly pear cacti in our yard at .

Native American sandpaintings are incredibly intricate designs created with sand. Each one has a sacred meaning. This one, hanging above the fireplace, represents the four worlds that the Dine (Navajo) ascended through. It is a very interesting story, just search "Dine four worlds" and read all about it.

If you're a foodie, you'll never run out of places to eat in southern New Mexico. I love chili rellenos and New Mexico does them best. It's one of the reasons we chose to move here (no kidding).

Most locals will direct you to Mesilla for the best New Mexican food and you definitely won't be disapointed with any of the options there.

Where did you eat during your stay ?

Our migratory hummingbirds are back! They usually start passing through in March and will then migrate back in fall. The Rio Grande runs through Las Cruces and is a huge bird migration corridor.

We see rufous, black-chinned, ruby throat, and a few others. A natural, visible cue as to when the hummingbirds will start showing up are the ocotillos, a tall, spiny, cactus plant. We have one in the front yard. In spring, they bloom beautiful red flowers on their tips that hummingbirds love!

We also have a hummingbird feeder in the backyard. If it’s empty during your stay, it’s super easy to make hummingbird nectar. Mix one cup of tap water and 1/4 cup of white sugar until the sugar dissolves completely and pour into the feeder. No dyes, no food color, clear nectar is best. Dyes and coloring are indigestible and can kill hummingbirds. Happy hummingbird watching!

Hikers will recognize this rock formation. This is a cairn, a stack of balanced rocks that mark the correct route of a trail so you don't get lost. Yes, these rocks are balanced. No, they are not glued nor do they have a rod through them holding them together. Yes, they will fall if they are messed with or if a strong wind blows. They were stacked and balanced very carefully.

This is a cow-tongue prickly pear cactus. The cactus pads are elongated like a cow's tongue. The two cow-tongue prickly pears located by the stop sign in the front yard began as a single pad clipping from a native cow-tongue prickly pear I found in the desert about 2 miles away from the house. I love watching entirely new plants grow from a single pad.

If you don't get enough sand in your clothes at White Sands National Park, there's also a kid's sandbox in the backyard for our little guests to enjoy. Built by my dad and sons, the hinged top folds open to form a bench seat on both sides and closes to protect the sand from native wildlife.

Most of our guests are visiting White Sands National Park. It's an amazing landscape with soft, fun sand to play in - an epic beach without water. We have beach chairs, sunbrellas, sand sleds, and picnic coolers in the garage that are free for guests to use and return during their stay.

It takes a lot of work and water to grow flowers in the desert. It's always best to work with native species or species that are at least acclimated for high-desert environments. While not all of the plants on the property are native, most are and those that aren't have shown success in this environment, even if it does take an act of God to keep them alive.

Spring is in the air! This House Sparrow and House Finch know that our backyard is a yummy food source for them and they visit year after year. Many birds can be spotted year-round in the mild climate of southern New Mexico, but Spring and Fall are the busiest birding seasons.

I have a love/hate relationship with cholla (pronounced choy-ya). I think they're a unique, amazing desert plant, but they are so dangerous.

One attacked me while hiking in Arizona! It was a different species, a "jumping" cholla, which literally detaches itself from it's plant and attaches itself to whatever is walking by. Removing it from my backside, and then my hand, was an excrutiating experience.

I used metal tongs to pop off a branch from a cholla in the desert and planted it in the cactus garden one year ago. It has already started aggressively growing into it's own plant. Amazing!

Check out all types of desert plants by booking on AirBnB or VRBO.

While water is life in the desert, the sun also gets a lot of respect. We have plenty of sun in southern New Mexico with over 300 days of sunshine per year. The sun is no joke here.

With a high-desert altitude of 4,500 feet in elevation, the sun demands respect. It blisters the desert landscape and can really do a number on our vehicles and rooftops.

It's extremely important to wear sunscreen everyday here because human skin can become sunburned without even realizing it.

Sun signs are plentiful. The state symbol, the Zia, even represents the sun. Get your dose of vitamin D at .

An adobe-style house, not too big and not too small, on a corner lot, with mountain views in the backyard (and all around - bonus). That was what we were looking for when we bought this home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Turns out, it's the same thing most of you are looking for when you're looking for a vacation home!

We are not investors. We actually lived here. We know the house, the property, the town, the mountains, the national parks. We know where to eat and what to do during all the seasons. So, when you stay at , you can ask us anything and we'll be able to help you have the vacation your family will remember for years to come.

A huge THANK YOU to all of the guests who have trusted us and made memories here so far, you've made this a great experience for us and helped make our little abode a successful vacation rental!

If you look out the front door of , you will be looking at the Dona Ana mountains. The most accessible part of these mountains is the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, where there is a nice loop nature trail hike.

To get to these large boulder formations will take an off-road high-clearance vehicle. It makes for a really fun day to go exploring in the mountains and finding areas like this to play.

When hiking or off-roading, always let someone know where you're going and when you're back just in case you get lost, injured, or break down. The desert gets cold at night and can be a very dangerous place. Know your limits!

Prehistoric Trackways National Monument is a relatively new National Monument in Las Cruces, NM that preserves prehistoric plant and animal fossils. This House Sparrow is one of the winter birds we see often in southern New Mexico. We have a birdfeeder in the backyard and, while I try to keep it full of sunflower seeds, there aren't many food sources in the desert during the winter, so the birds devour it almost as fast as I put it out.

02/02/2022

One of my favorite things about traveling is seeing different wildlife. A lot of people think there's no wildlife in the desert other than poisonous snakes and spiders. But, there's actually an entire ecosystem full of beneficial wildlife.

In the desert by our house, we've seen birds, quail, falcons, eagles, owls, rabbits, packrats, roadrunners, lizards, tarantulas, scorpions, horned toads, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, and I've heard that there have been mountain lion sightings. That's a lot of wildlife!

About a year or so ago, I bought a trail camera with the intention of putting it out in the desert to see what I could capture. The first night, I put it in the backyard just to test it. Imagine my surprise when I caught a grey fox on camera in the backyard!

Ever since, our fox has visited our backyard almost every night. He even brought a female companion with him for a while. We were hoping for babies, but never saw any. He has visited as early as around 7pm to as late as around 5am in the morning, basically anytime it's dark.
