Exodus Outdoor Adventures

Exodus Outdoor Adventures Formerly an adventure guide, I've decided to hang up that hat and just explore.

If you've trekked with me in the past or I've been recommended to you by someone, I'm happy to refer you to my favorite guide service.

Oh, look at that! What's that up there sticking out of the rock? It kind of looks like logs...
Hiking out at Clarno, you may notice this feature at the end of the Arch Trail. They are petrified trees that once caught up in a giant mudflow called a lahar! Look for them and other plant fossils while enjoying Clarno.

It's tourist season in the desert. Don't be the reason this sign was put up.

Melody Arch. Some argue it's in AZ. Others swear it's in UT. We don't care as long as we can walk there. 🤫

Wilderness is a necessity ... They will see what I meant in time. There must be places for human beings to satisfy their souls. Food and drink is not all. There is the spiritual. In some it is only a germ, of course, but the germ will grow.

This week’s Indy Environment newsletter looks at a legislative effort to protect a unique population of Rocky Mountain juniper trees in an area known as Bahsahwahbee, or “the sacred water valley” in Shoshone. For Indigenous communities, the area means everything.

While far away from Vegas, we stand with Friends of Oceano Dunes on this. It is rare to find beautiful beach camping in the west coast. On our visits, there is ample room for campers, ATV/SXS, and beach goers all in one place. It was amazing to see last summer how pristine the area is even after decades of all these activities happening in the same place. Our best wishes go out to all the local small businesses that rely on the visitors to OD for their livelihood. We'll see you in July as usual 😉.

What’s in your backyard? Kit foxes are the smallest species of fox in North America. In Nevada, you are most likely to see a kit fox in the southern portion of the state, throughout the Mojave Desert. If you are out hiking in these environments, you are still not very likely to see a kit fox unless you are out on a night hike. Kit foxes spend most of the day in their dens to avoid the desert heat and come out at night to hunt. They are occasionally active at dawn and dusk, especially during the cooler parts of the year.
What makes them unique?
-Kit foxes have unproportionally large ears that lend them incredible hearing. Not only do their large ears allow them to hear well but they also allow them to dissipate heat from their bodies. This adaptation allows them to survive in habitats where temperatures can reach well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
-Additionally, the bottom of their feet have hair that covers their pads to prevent burning their feet on the hot desert floor.
-Kit foxes have fairly small home ranges, averaging only a few square miles each. Ranges for different individuals and family groups may even overlap.
-Kit foxes are a monogamous species, meaning that they mate for life. Once a pair has bonded, the female will choose a nesting den among the several dens that the pair may share. Once the pups are born, the female will stay in or near the den full time while the male hunts and brings back food.
-Starting at around the age of three to four months, the fox pups will begin to hunt with their parents and by five to six months of age they are independent. Most of the pups disperse after about eight or nine months, but some female pups may stick around to help raise the next litter.

Visit any NV state park for FREE! Now, you can “check out” a FREE pass from your local library to “trek out” Nevada State Parks! The passes are available to all library cardholders and may be borrowed for a week, then returned to the library for others to check out. This new program started on January 1, 2023 and provides more Nevadans with opportunities to discover our spectacular State Parks by removing barriers and creating more equitable access to nature.
