A message from our Founder & CEO Tara Short

On Small Business Saturday I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of the 364 participants over 30 tours in 2024 to Alaska, Baja Mexico, Costa Rica, Greenland, Galapagos, Idaho, Iceland, Honduras (Roatán), Peru, Tanzania, and Uganda.

In 2008, I used my last $1000 to start Green Edventures. In 2009, I led my first tours for student groups in Alaska. Then in 2010, I hosted my first women’s trip in Baja thanks to our friends Becoming an Outdoors Woman

Because of the initial support and trust from a handful of teachers and organizations that believed in me, and my deep desire to help people to have extraordinary encounters with wild places and wildlife we are celebrating 16 years together!!

If Green Edventures was a child, she would be driving. It’s definitely a humbling to see kids of my students joining the same trips that inspired them when they were teenagers.

Furthermore, there are women who have gone on 5-15 tours with us over the years. They have seen the evolution of Green Edventures from a wildlife focus to hiking, to knitting, to wellness.

As a kid, I was always creating clubs for my friends. I didn’t know then that I was practicing for my big club, Green Edventures Tours & Expeditions.

Wow! What an incredible journey it has been. We are still a small business, and that’s ok. When you inquire about a tour I’m still the one who answers the phone or email. If you are getting ready for a big adventure, you have a direct line to your tour leader to ask questions, and most of all we truly care about each and every person who joins one of our tours. If you have a question about a payment, Carrie responds quickly.

I continue to be amazed when participants write me to say their trip with GE is the most memorable of their lives. I believe in universal magic the way a beautiful destinations brings together strangers, and turn them into life-long friends.

Not to forget, we have partners in all of our destinations that treat us and our travelers like family. They are there to share their knowledge and stories, but also are the front line in case of an emergency. We work with local experts who care. I’ve always wanted to facilitate meaningful relationships with people, not properties or businesses.

Finally, I should mention that for 14 years we were offsetting our carbon emissions via Carbonfund dot org. Last year we worked in partnership with ARC (Amazon Rainforest Conservancy) to purchase land in the Peruvian Amazon. The trees help reduce atmospheric carbon, create wildlife corridors, and wildlife habitat. We also work with local operators and support conservation efforts in the places we travel.
