Donald Trump has risen to the top of the Republican presidential primary field in part by manipulating the media. Rather than spending his personal wealth on television advertisements or devoting hours of his days to courting television and print reporters, he has, through the strength of his personality, gotten the press corps to cover him on his schedule and their dime.
There have been tangible benefits for Trump, who has claimed that he is roughly $35 million under budget. The assertion is impossible to actually confirm but supports the idea he’s gotten a ton of free coverage.
“He has gotten hundreds of millions of dollars in free publicity just off of his message, his speeches, his social media presence,” said Elizabeth Wilner, senior vice president at Kantar Media Intelligence, a company that tracks political ad spending.
All of which made his claim ...

Republican presidential candidates are beginning 2016 with a full head of steam in what could be the most critical period for the party in decades. While Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz currently are leading in the national polls of likely Republican voters, it is hard to predict the final outcome of next month's primaries and caucuses.
For political junkies, the Republican race has so far been surprising and unpredictable. Real estate mogul Donald Trump has dominated media coverage and the polls since he announced his candidacy last June. From the very beginning he has exploited voter anger with caustic and abrasive rhetoric. Over the weekend he told a cheering Biloxi, Mississippi, audience, "People are so tired of the incompetence. They're so tired of stupidity." Trump has pledged to deport those who are in this country illegally, to build a wall along the Mexican ...

Going out on New Year's Eve is like braving the wild frontier: everyone must fend for themselves, and you will probably end up dirty.
In this video, one brave bouncer at the Gatsby club in Ontario donned a GoPro to show everyone what it was like to face the barrage of drunken imbeciles who were out and about on New Year's.
Highlights include drunken arguments, and one woman who seems unconcerned with the fact that she's not wearing shoes.

Sacre bleu: French restaurants have been ordered to hand out doggy bags to customers to cut down on food waste.

French restaurateurs have expressed consternation after a new law has made le doggy bag - long considered a dining faux pas in France - a legal requirement.
The new law came into force on New Year's Day, and dining establishments serving more than 150 covers a day are now required to provide doggy bags or a take-away box if a customer asks for one.
It's part of an initiative launched by the French government in 2013, with the aim of reducing food waste by 50% by 2025. Seven million tonnes of food are thrown away each year in France, and the restaurant industry alone is responsible for one million tonnes of food waste.
An opinion poll conducted in 2014 found that 75% of French people were open ...

A Lannister always pays his debts...but apparently, George R.R. Martin doesn't. At least, not in a timely fashion.
In a 1,800-word blog post published over New Year's weekend, Martin announced that he missed his New Year's Eve deadline for completing The Winds of Winter, the 6th installment in A Song of Ice and Fire series.
"THE WINDS OF WINTER is not finished,' writes Martin. "Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You're disappointed, and you're not alone."
Some fans are reacting with shows of support. But others have just one question: WHAT GIVES, GEORGE?!
A Dance with Dragons came out in 2012. AND IT HAD CLIFFHANGERS! Sure, the HBO adaptation will pick up in April — meaning that Game of Thrones will officially move beyond the book series. In other words, the show will spoil the books. (In certain storylines. The ...

Oculus VR's trumpeting of the Oculus Rift's upcoming pre-order date seems a little premature for excitement, but it could mean virtual reality fans have headsets in hand in less than a month.
While this may seem speculative, it's based on a discussion with Oculus Vice President of Product Nate Mitchell that came during the company's last developer-focused conference, held in Los Angeles in September. I asked Mitchell why, with a captive audience of VR's earliest adopters at the ready, Oculus had not yet announced a pre-order date or price for the final Rift Consumer headset, which had been making the rounds since June.
"There's no rush to take pre-orders. We don't need your money right now. It doesn't benefit us, and it doesn't benefit you either," he said. "I'm a guy who thinks about user experience all ...

Kourtney Kardashian opened up about dealing with anxiety in a letter she shared on her website Monday.
"When I was pregnant with Reign, I knew that I was going to go hard at working out afterwards," she wrote on KourtneyKardashian.com. "I couldn't wait to feel strong and in shape again. I didn't know that I would be going through a break up and just an overall crazy year."
The mother of three split from her partner Scott Disick back in July after nine years together. Reports circulated about Disick's substance abuse issues and alleged cheating on the reality star.
"Everyone deals with hard times in their lives differently. I'm generally not a nervous person but I get anxious. I also get nauseous and feel like I can't eat when it is really bad, but I force myself to stay healthy."
Kardashian has turned to exercise for relief, and has shared photos of her ...

Intel has made yet another hardware acquisition to build up its business of integrating its processors and RealSense imaging technology into the next wave of connected devices beyond PCs. Today the company announced it has purchased Ascending Technologies, a Germany-based startup that makes small drones and the software used to fly them.
Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed but Intel described it to me as a “small company”. All 75 employees will be getting offers to join Intel, she added.
At a time when there is increasing regulatory and public scrutiny over drone safety and how they will be used, Ascend has touted its own software for its accuracy of movement, using LED-based “light painting” and long-exposure photography to show just how this works. (The illustration above confirming the acquisition was also created ...

Mark Zuckerberg has a simple message for young women everywhere: be the nerd you want to see (or date) in the world.
On Sunday, one matchmaking grandmother tried to flatter the Facebook CEO by writing in a comment on his page that she always tells her granddaughters to "date the nerd" because he may just become the next Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg, who has been responding to many, many comments lately while on paternity leave taking care of his adorable daughter Max, was quick to try (politely) changing the way she thinks about her granddaughters' future prospects.
"Even better would be to encourage them to *be* the nerd in their school," ...

My first two articles in this three-part series on the gifts that the Olympic and World skiing champion, Mikaela Shiffrin, has given to athletes for the holidays focused on how to react to disappointment and the importance of fight to perform your best. In this last article in my series, I want to share with you the final gift that Mikaela has given athletes for this holiday season: risk.
I have been a keen observer of Mikaela since I first saw her train at Burke Mountain Academy (a private boarding school in Vermont of which I'm also an alum) when she was 13. There were two things that always struck me about her skiing. First, she was always rock solid; always stable, well balanced, and rarely out of control. Second, she was remarkably consistent; I don't remember ever seeing her DNF on a training course. And here's a freakish statistic: Mikaela has not finished a race THREE TIMES ...

Thanks to the Internet, we're now able to instantly secure the information we need to make decisions in our lives. These can be mundane choices — like choosing a restaurant, or picking a gym to join to keep those New Year's resolutions alive — or important determinations, like selecting a specific doctor or hospital to receive care from.
Today, hospitals, many of which have dozens of centers, thousands of employees and many more patients, know that access to healthcare information is one of the most important services they can provide.
To learn how hospitals are innovating and communicating with patients in the Information Age, we spoke to David A. Feinberg, the vice president of marketing and CMO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the largest hospital by number of beds in the U.S., according ...

The Daddy Diaries. Chapter 42. Who's Your Diddy?
Last night I was watching a documentary about the epidemic of he**in use in America, especially among white teenagers in New England. It was very depressing. I've never used he**in and I don't want to sound judgmental, but as I watched these young white teenagers inject themselves all I could think was how when you're an addict, your focus is on getting high, which makes it impossible for you to help anybody else in a meaningful way.
Maybe I'm wrong. Or worse, maybe I'm a hypocrite.
Case in point: this morning when Lev woke up, I carried him into our bed and all I wanted was to go back to sleep for a little while. But he kept asking, "Daddy?" At first I felt like saying, who the hell else do you think I am?
But then I realized he was saying, "Diddy," and since Diddy wasn't in our bed --for once--I didn't say anything. Who am I to ...

The Obama administration tread warily Monday around inflamed tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia that threaten several key U.S. foreign policy objectives.
A U.S. official said Secretary of State John Kerry had spoken Sunday with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, while the official Saudi Press Agency reported that Kerry had spoken on Monday with Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Salman.
Kerry is also planning to make a round of calls Monday to the foreign ministers of all the Sunni-led states in the Persian Gulf region, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates ...

In the most recent edition of Kids being funny OR adults lying for Internet points, we bring you The School Company.
According to the Reddit post, 7-year-old Cara G, assisted her parents in retrieving the mail on Sunday, a day that every adult knows there is no postal service.
Cara returned with a highly believable letter from her elementary school that read, "The school company is taking a brake [sic] so the kids will get one more week of school off."

View post on imgur.com

For good measure and to make it seem totally legit, Cara was then asked to sign her name.
She should probably get an extra week off just for being totally awesome.
