Grouping No. 2 “Industry”, is comprised of photographs from an abandoned steel mill, a rail yard, and a silk thread factory. While many consider the photos to be depressing, I feel differently. These places were once important to many - sometimes thousands - for jobs, products, services and community livelihoods.
Time has moved on, and for one reason or another, these places are now dormant.
Rather than decay, there’s a certain dignity and beauty in their colors and textures, and they possess an eerie quietness and peacefulness. Walking through them, you can’t help being moved by the thoughts of what was once frenetic activity.

Something new. Groupings!

This one shows the stages of a Tibetan Buddhist sand mandala. The monks meticulously create these beautiful works of art out of brightly colored grains of sand. They work day and night for several days to create the mandala, display it, and then “deconstruct” it, symbolizing impermanence and the transient nature of life.

Following the deconstruction, the monks take the sand to the nearest flowing water and pour it in, distributing its energy and good wishes to the earth. It’s truly a moving process to watch.

The second installment of last weekend's photography... Another abandoned site, Lynnewood Hall in Philadelphia. The home was built in 1898 for Peter A.B. Widener, a wealthy businessman and one of the founders of US Steel. It once housed one of the largest private collections of fine art in the country, which was donated to the National Gallery of Art. The family occupied the home until it was sold in the 1940s, and it and its 300 acre grounds have been vacant for years. The Lynnewood Hall Preservation Foundation now owns the home and is restoring it. Abandoned America organized the shoot and raised significant funds for the Foundation.

Ok, this is not really a theme, but more of a sub-theme. And some of these are oldies, but here are more favorites. “Dogs waiting patiently”. These are 5 photos of dogs waiting patiently for their owners in Spain, Ireland, Amsterdam, New York and Boston - and as a bonus, three hounds doing the same in Western PA.

In all of those places, the people dress differently, have different customs and speak in different languages or with different accents, but the dogs all look the same!!

Second theme - top 25 (Don't worry, there won't be one of these everyday...I'm just on a roll.)

One of the 5 JT personalities has to do with mountains. This includes living in them, climbing them, photographing them, and supporting mountain cultures, communities and conservation during my time at the Mountain Institute.

Here are photos from the Himalayan, Andes and Appalachian mountains (and one from out west). They comprise the highest, the longest and the oldest mountain ranges on earth. They are home of the vast majority of the world's natural resources, yet they are some of the most fragile ecosystems. Over 80% of our drinking water originates in them. They are inhabited by some of the most marginalized populations - often living in abject poverty - but who are also the most rugged, resourceful, hard-working, generous and often happiest people I've met.

"The mountains are calling and I must go..." John Muir

UPDATE - have to add two more! The Picos de Europa is a rugged, craggy range in northern Spain. The 26th and 27th photos are Lagos Cavadongas, beautiful mountain lakes up high, and Boules, a small village, accessible on foot, high in the Picos. The architecture and lifestyle in this village could be found in any of the high mountains of the world!

I have been organizing photos into themes, and sifting down to a “Top 25” of each theme. We’ll begin with the “Patina” theme.

I love shooting abandoned places. While many consider the photos to be depressing, I feel differently. These places were once important to many - sometimes thousands - for jobs, products, services and community livelihoods. Time has moved on, and for one reason or another, these places are now dormant.

Rather than decay, I believe there’s a certain dignity and beauty in their colors and textures, and they posses an eerie quietness and peacefulness. Walking through them, you can’t help being moved by the thoughts of what was once frenetic activity.

May they rest in peace.

Note: These, in no particular order, are from a variety of places, including:

Klotz Throwing Mill (silk thread) near Frostburg, MD
Eastern State Peninentary - Philadelphia
Carrie Furnace - Rankin PA
Churches in Philadelphia and Wilkinsburg
Altman Mill - Saltsburg, PA
Weston State Hospital, Weston WV
Brownsville Hospital, Brownsville PA
Trolley Graveyard, Windber, PA

Press1Photos is changing! This year, we will no longer be a vendor at the Ligonier Country Market. Instead, we are planning to more frequently rotate the photos on display at G Squared Gallery in Ligonier (something new to look at every month) and have 2-3 open houses at the studio during the summer.

The metal prints have been so popular at G Squared that we’re offering more metal photos in the line up. The colors really pop!

Ok, so I bought a 105mm f/2.8 macro lens for my new camera, watched 27 YouTube vids, learned focus stacking to optimize depth of field, and went out shooting with mixed results.

THEN, I found out I can get these 12 mp photos with my iPhone.
