A few from Friday and Saturday. The Velocity Invitational is great once again! This year, it's brutally hot - hovering around 100 degrees! For the first time, my memory cards are overheating.

One more day today and then thousands of photos to edit on the way home.

Grouping No. 2 “Industry”, is comprised of photographs from an abandoned steel mill, a rail yard, and a silk thread factory. While many consider the photos to be depressing, I feel differently. These places were once important to many - sometimes thousands - for jobs, products, services and community livelihoods.
Time has moved on, and for one reason or another, these places are now dormant.
Rather than decay, there’s a certain dignity and beauty in their colors and textures, and they possess an eerie quietness and peacefulness. Walking through them, you can’t help being moved by the thoughts of what was once frenetic activity.

Something new. Groupings!

This one shows the stages of a Tibetan Buddhist sand mandala. The monks meticulously create these beautiful works of art out of brightly colored grains of sand. They work day and night for several days to create the mandala, display it, and then “deconstruct” it, symbolizing impermanence and the transient nature of life.

Following the deconstruction, the monks take the sand to the nearest flowing water and pour it in, distributing its energy and good wishes to the earth. It’s truly a moving process to watch.

The second installment of last weekend's photography... Another abandoned site, Lynnewood Hall in Philadelphia. The home was built in 1898 for Peter A.B. Widener, a wealthy businessman and one of the founders of US Steel. It once housed one of the largest private collections of fine art in the country, which was donated to the National Gallery of Art. The family occupied the home until it was sold in the 1940s, and it and its 300 acre grounds have been vacant for years. The Lynnewood Hall Preservation Foundation now owns the home and is restoring it. Abandoned America organized the shoot and raised significant funds for the Foundation.
