Realizing our small farm in Summers County will someday be too demanding, we undertook Maple Mead in the winter of 2020 on a long vacant lot at the edge of Lewisburg. Our design goals demanded basic accessibility on the grade, maximum sustainability with low maintenance, neighborhood compatibility, and inclusion of local materials.
We lucked into a fine design/build firm (Seven Rivers) with excellent architectural drawing defining the project, just before the pandemic complicated everything. They perservered through a huge excavation, supply shortages, and the plumbing of a radiant floor. With their help we structured the porch with Greenbrier County red spruce. They completed and painted the shell inside and out and left the woodwork to us by spring 2021.
As back-to-the-land scavenger salvagers, we had many stashs of lumber and stone to deploy. We enjoyed flooring, trim, paneling, and furnishing for months. By summer we putting stone from the farm under the porch and into the landscape and welcoming guests.
