A Mother's Heart

A Mother's Heart I am a Certified Professional Midwife (home birth) who honors a mother's intuition and autonomy. Pregnancy and child birth have always been a passion of mine.

I believe the miracle of pregnancy and birth, and the joy of growing a family to be one of the most beautiful things about humanity. After giving birth to my first baby, and not having the experience I had hoped for, I began my personal mission of wanting to help, support and empower women to have the birth experience that they desire. That mission put me on the path to becoming doula. After certi

fying through DONA International and serving many families as a doula, I decided to go to midwifery school. I attended Midwives College of Utah and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Midwifery. It is my honor and privilege to serve women/families on their home birth journey.

Studying for NRP recertification. Did you know that midwives are trained/certified in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)? While most newborns make the transition to life outside the womb without intervention, some babies need a little help (extra stimulation) and rarely, some babies need life saving interventions. This is where NRP comes in. It is a very specific program/protocol to “establish effective ventilation of the baby’s lungs.”
My birth assistant and I maintain current NRP certification and set up all necessary equipment at EVERY birth so we are prepared to help your baby if needed.

6 week visits are bitter sweet. I love seeing the changes in this sweet baby, so alert and 3lbs heavier than her birth weight. And it’s a joy a to witness how nurturing and attentive her parents are and how their eyes twinkle when they talk about her. But I will also miss seeing these beautiful faces frequently. Till next time ❤️

I love 24hr visits with healthy, squishy newborns. His beautiful mama and big sister were in arms reach as I checked him out. Family centered care is the best!!❤️

What to expect in early labor?
Mild cramping and contractions will start to build. Your goal is to be patient and don’t pay too close attention to them until they require your full attention. 😉

Go about your normal activities, take lots of opportunities to rest, making sure to eat and drink as normal. 💜

No matter how long you do this work, my hope for you is that you are still able to take pause in this moment. That when you witness this moment of liminality, of a new being between two worlds, you still feel the deep knowing that comes from sitting at the most sacred altar.

Birth is magic. Remember to give yourself permission to be mystified.

Happy International Home birth Day!!

My home birth 8 years ago was life changing and it helped solidify my dream of becoming a midwife.

I love being a midwife and I love home birth! ❤️

“Normalize letting them grow until they're done.

Let the Creator finish His knitting.

Silence the outsider who guesses their weight and deems your body incapable of birthing it.

Ignore the arbitrary date calculated as one size fits all for the woman who has 28 day cycles and ovulates on day 14.

Keep them in even if you're tired and done and over it.

Fight for their health and safety at 41 weeks like you would at 8 weeks.

Let them operate on their clock, for babies know nothing of holidays and doctors leaving town.

Cherish your full belly, as heavy and uncomfortable and cumbersome as it may be.

Be in awe of the dance between your baby, your body, and their Author.

Rest assured there is a reason they haven't arrived yet.

And enjoy the last tired moments before your heart grows to love another again.”

The Golden Hour has SO many benefits!!

The Golden Hour has SO many benefits!!

In the moments just after birth, it might not seem like much is happening to the untrained eye. But really a beautiful and intricate dance of bonding, co-regulation, and laying of the groundwork for breastfeeding is unfolding. All orchestrated by hormones and the physical contact between mama and baby.

This is Golden Hour- the hour of (hopefully uninterrupted) skin-to-skin contact between mama and baby directly after birth. SO much is happening during this time just below the skin and between them- incredible physiologic changes for both, powerful emotional experiences, and connection.

For baby, this time helps with blood sugar regulation and regulating body temperature. For mama, this skin-to-skin contact helps with hormone production that positively impacts milk production and helps with breastfeeding. For both, this bonding time sets the framework for a growing relationship even years into the future.

If you're birthing in a hospital, your provider should know that this time is special but it's okay to remind them that you want to hold baby immediately after birth.

If you didn't get this time with your little one for whatever reason, try not to worry too much. You can both still get skin-to-skin benefits even after the first hour after birth by placing baby on your bare chest. This can be comforting for both you and baby and may even be helpful if you're having trouble breastfeeding.

Do you remember the golden hour after your birth? What was it like? What made it most special? What do you wish had been different? I'd love to hear about your unique experiences in the comments ❤️.

Amen!

Here’s your daily PSA!

Dilation does not predict when you will go into labor!

Your cervix is not a crystal ball; you could be 1cm and go into labor that day or 5cm and go into labor in a few weeks.

Effacement *may* be more of a predictor of labor onset, but not necessarily either!

So, if you are getting cervical checks during pregnancy and your provider states you haven’t made change between your appointments, and states that you should get an induction bc you’re never going to go into labor. Nod your head and say “cool, I’m not in labor, so I don’t expect to make any cervical change. Also, dilation does not predict labor onset.”

Moral of this story? Your dilation during pregnancy does not predict when you’ll go into labor.
