👻 On this spooky Thursday in The Catskills, learn about the history of Burn Brae Mansion from Catskills Paper Trail

“Singer Sewing Machine Company president George Ross MacKenzie and seven of his children each built their own summer mansions in Glen Spey. Our subject today, Burn Brae, the home of George’s daughter Margaret Ross MacKenzie Elkin, is one of the three that remain. [photos 1-4]

And some say it’s haunted.

But first: I tumbled down the rabbit hole of the Real Scottish Americans of Sullivan County. This bonnie landscape reminded the elder MacKenzie of his native Scotland, so in 1880 he renamed the hamlet of South Lebanon, Glen Spey.

Some or all of the MacKenzie dynasty mansions were likely designed by architect Henry J. Hardenbergh, whose credits include the Waldorf Astoria, the Plaza Hotel, and the Dakota.

And this seems very “rich people of the 1800s”: the MacKenzie estate was once stocked with deer and elk in a large enclosed area. “The animals flourished well in their new habitat and increased rapidly,” reported the Waterbury Evening Democrat in 1898.

Today, Burn Brae is a bed and breakfast, motel, and venue hosting murder mysteries and paranormal investigations, run by Pat and Mike Fraysse. It’s a well-established Halloween destination, with their Dark Forest Fright Trail turning 30 this year.

Reports of paranormal activity at the 116 year-old estate, spanning four decades, includes doors opening and slamming, children’s voices, unexplained animal sounds, organ music, balls bouncing, and the apparitions of a woman in white, a man in turn-of-the-century clothing, and a more modern man in overalls.

And if you want to get spooked by long-ago missed real estate opportunities, Mike mentioned that the Tiffany windows over the staircase were probably worth more than they paid for Burn Brae in the early 90s.

But most exciting to me was discovering that the small lake at the Glen Spey crossroads was most likely MacKenzie’s Lake, and that potentially 2 structures dating to their era are still there! I was lurking around getting photos of the roadside stone entryway to what might have been the mansion called Bel Air, or possibly even George Ross MacKenzie’s mansion [pic 6], and went to look at the lake since I’ve long been intrigued by the small structure on the little island [pic 7]. I found a wee boat house almost totally covered in overgrowth [pic 8]. You can see them both in the early 1900s postcard image [pic 9], and it looks like there used to be a bridge to the island. The card image shows them from a different angle than my photos [pic 10 shows boathouse, island would be further into lake to the left of photo”
