๐ŸŒŸ Youth power in action! This week, our awesome young leaders proved just how effective they can be when they work together. By creating a spider web of string and navigating through it without a hitch, they showed that anything is possible when we support each other. They had so much fun they asked to repeat the activity two days in a row! So proud of these future world-changers!

Boys and Girls Club of the North Country Awarded $1.97 million for New Child Care Center

October 30, 2024 (Lisbon, NH) -- The Boys & Girls Club of the North Country has been allocated a $1.97 million grant from the Governorโ€™s Office for Emergency Relief and Recovery (GOFERR), led by Commissioner Taylor Caswell. The grant of ARPA funds will be used to create a new child care center at its Lisbon clubhouse.

Lack of access to child care is an urgent concern in the North Country, where the pandemic exacerbated an already-dwindling supply. The Boys & Girls Club of the North Country gained expertise in the early education field in 2023, when it merged with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Hampshire. The Central NH Club already was operating eight early learning centers in the Greater Concord and Lakes Regions. This summer, the organization opened a child care center at the former North Woods Early Learning center in Gorham, while retrofitting infant, toddler and preschool classrooms at White Mountains Community College.

North Country early childhood programs will be overseen by Melanie Smith, Early Childhood Manager for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central and Northern New Hampshire. Smith has extensive experience in early childhood education as a former center director and licensing and evaluation coordinator for the NH Bureau of Child Care Licensing. She is an adjunct professor at White Mountains Community College.

Executive Director Sandy Brackett said she was excited that families would have the opportunity for a โ€œone-stop-shopโ€ for their childcare needs. โ€œWe have a great location off of Route 302 and plenty of space. I think families will be happy to have the convenience of dropping off and picking up their pre-school and school-age child at the same place. And as the children grow, they can continue with us until they are teenagers, which is really reassuring for kids and families!โ€

The plan is to construct three early learning classrooms within the Clubโ€™s current facility next to Evergreen Sports Center. The North Country Club recently received a child care license from the NH Bureau of Child Care Licensing, a major step. Construction is anticipated to begin in Winter 2025.

๐ŸŒŸ Exciting News! ๐ŸŒŸ

Our amazing volunteer, Lisa Jacobs, is up for the Spirit of NH Award! ๐ŸŽ‰ This annual celebration honors individuals who go above and beyond in their service to the community, and Lisa truly embodies that spirit.

For the past eight years, Lisa has been a dedicated volunteer and board member for the Boys and Girls Club of the North Country. As a vital member of our Safety Committee, she has volunteered her time to train staff in CPR and first aid, sharing her extensive knowledge and experience to ensure a safer environment for our kids.

Lisa has also had a profound impact on the North Country swimming community as a swim instructor, lifeguard instructor, CPR trainer, and more...ensuring safety and confidence in the water for countless individuals.

In addition, weโ€™re extremely proud to share that one of our group leaders, Iris Wood, is also up for nomination in the youth/young adult category for their outstanding work with the New Hampshire Teen Institute! Over the years, Iris has excelled at connecting with youth, encouraging them to lead and take positive risks while fostering a welcoming environment.

Now, Lisa and Iris need YOUR help! Please take a moment to vote and help shine a spotlight on their incredible work. Your support means the world to us.๐Ÿ’™

WOW! We are incredibly moved by this donation. This is going to impact so many kids in Central and Northern New Hampshire - including the North Country members! Thank you Mr. Church!

Long-time supporter and retired Rowley Agency CEO Dan Church recently surprised us with a very generous $1 million donation from the Dan and Terry Church Charitable Fund! He also became a member of our new Heritage Society by naming the Club as a beneficiary of his estate plans. We are so grateful for this generous support, which will go a long way toward meeting childrenโ€™s current and future needs. Thank you, Mr. Church!
