One of the most fun food tours ever! We laughed so hard, and we were like rock stars of the Italian Riviera! Walking the streets sampling the best foods of the Ligurian Coast, and our own pesto class in a private garden. We got a private visit into a medieval church getting ready for Christmas, a tasting of pasta from one of the best restaurant that open just for us, and so much more! The gelato, the homemade focaccia bread, and so much more! Truly one of my favorite experiences ever in Italy and I can’t wait to do it again!

WOW!
Off the beaten path to Carrara, Italy! The coveted marble of the world is mined from here. From a distance, it looks look snow-capped mountains, but it is marble! It was fascinating to see how it is mined, and especially to see what the artisans do with the marble. The block of marble for David was mined from here for Michelangelo. He rejected block after block until he found the one he liked. We also met one of the famous artisans whose work has been shipped around the for more than 50 years. Stay tuned for a video or two!

Blue crabs in Italy?!?!? Astoundingly, yes!
In the past few years, blue crabs from the USA have been found on the coast of Italy and now offered in seafood markets. Speculation is that freighter ships who have to fill their bottoms with water when their freight is low to maintain weight/balance, let our water from its hold once on the coast of Italy, and the water contained our southern USA blue crabs. While it sounds delightful for them, it has come with a caveat. The blue crabs are eating up the mussels that nest in their shoreline.

How are olives harvested in Italy? Here are two examples! First, Manuele’s daughter and her school dress up as olive farmers at their school. They learn how the olive picking works. In the next photos, we saw gentlemen in a town with a power rake used to get the olives out of the trees while the others hold a net the catch them. Fresh and beautiful olives ready to become organic extra virgin olive oil! Extra Virgin means the first press of the olives and is the best. After this press, they cannot use the word “extra” in the label, and the also many times chemicals are added, so it is no longer organic. We learned that other countries like China produce a lot of olive oil with preservatives and chemicals. So be particular about your olive oil…. Extra Virgin from Italy or Italia should be on the label. :)

Imagine a town of 100-150 people that began slowly dying away…. older generations dying and the younger generation wanting a bigger city. Then meet our friend, Guiseppe, who works every day with such incredible passion to help transform this former medieval village to a highest-quality organic small production olive oil farm and winery. Only 15,000 bottles per year of production made in the finest and most discerning way. Such a special place and we will never forget him and these delicious wines and oil!

Our friend and driver guide took us for a private winery adventure to a castle dating back to 1414. The symbol of the winery is three circles symbolizing the Holy Trinity. All of us fell in love with the owner’s dog, an English Setter with the special ability to put a paw gently on your leg as a kind way of asking for a biscuit. 😂. We ended the day with a fabulous dinner at our chef-friend’s mother’s restaurant. Our friend Silvia is a Michelin-starred chef, who grew up cooking at the apron strings of her beloved mom. We were spoiled at your mom’s traditional Tuscan restaurant with simple and delicious food and a night we will never forget! That’s amore!

“That guy looks like Johnny”, said Jerry. Surprise guests today! 🥰. We all enjoyed a small production winery and farm together, with a lunch and tastings prepared just for us! We’ve learned a light Tuscan lunch means delicious appetizers, two pasta dishes and dessert! Earlier today, the ladies enjoyed some retail therapy of Made in Italy goods. We watched the seamstress and my friends are now loaded down with bags! Incredible views from a few special places, including a tiny church where we loved the St Anthony’s statue and lit some candles.

Castiglione del Lago and Assisi… magical! Our private guide was outstanding! Not only is he from Assisi, he has studied the town’s history and the Basilica of St Francis for most of his life. We visited the tomb of St Francis, the Basilica and many rooms…. Completely fascinating! (No photos are allowed, so you must come see for yourself!). We lit a candle for our friend George. Assisi and the Basilica are both Unesco World Heritage sites, and the Basilica is property of the Vatican.
