Summer sports stands in Finland in the 1960s: the men wore suits and collared shirts, and the few women in the stands wore dresses. Even at leisure time, the dress was the same as everywhere else. The old suit pants had just been replaced by fishing suits.
In the glory days of Finnish sport a hundred years ago, even the best long-distance runners trained in ordinary everyday clothes. Training for endurance runners differed from Sunday walks for ordinary citizens only in terms of speed; even the world's elite trained on foot during the winter months, when it was considered important not to overexert themselves during training. Of course, walking is also safer on slippery roads. During the competition season, athletes train in their underwear and wear loose cotton warm-up suits before putting on their real tracksuits.
