The Leimert Park intersection of 43rd Street and Degnan was dedicated on Sept.10th as Barbara Morrison Square in honor of the late, legendary jazz singer—coinciding with the anniversary of her birth and the inaugural edition of the Barbara Morrison Jazz & Blues Music Festival. She founded the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in 2009 to bring music to the Leimert Park community. She would often give free music and voice lessons to children and give them a chance to perform on stage. She also founded the California Jazz & Blues Museum in Leimert Park in 2011.
She sang with some of jazz's biggest names, including Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Kenny Burrell, Hank Crawford, Nancy Wilson, Mel Tormé, Ray Brown, the Count Basie Orchestra and Doc Severinsen's Big Band. Over the course of her career appeared on more than 20 recordings. According to the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, where she served as an adjunct professor of global jazz studies, she performed at Carnegie Hall, toured Europe with Ray Charles and sang at the North Sea, Bern and Pl***oy jazz festivals. Morrison died March 16 at age 72.

Join the Friends of Allensworth and California State Parks for a Black History Month celebration at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park on Saturday, February 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visitors are welcome to interact with docents dressed in period attire, participate in guided and/or self-paced tours of the park's historic buildings, and enjoy live entertainment, music, and food.

PAM KNOWS L.A. : Two of the sites that we visit during the "Our Roots Run Deep" tour have been nominated for designation as historic cultural landmarks. According to the Los Angeles Conservancy this is a great step forward for historic preservation: approximately less than 4% of the city’s Historic-Cultural Monuments are related to Black history. The home on the left belonged to Paul R. Williams, the first African American architect in California to be admitted the American Institute of Architects, while the house on the right belonged to Eddie Rochester Anderson. Mr. Anderson had this home moved and placed in the Jefferson Park community after he was barred from living in it in the community where it was built. Due to racial housing covenants in place in Los Angeles, both men were barred from living in affluent European American neighborhoods for much of their careers. WINTER WONDERLAND SPECIALTY TOUR: One of the joys of winter is to see many homes throughout the various communities of greater L.A. adorned with Christmas lights. During this tour we dash through the smog in our gas efficient minibus sipping hot apple cider and nibbling donuts while viewing wonderful light displays of the season. We stop for a bite to eat as well. Cost includes round trip transportation, drivers tip, & refreshments. We did not schedule our annual Winter Wonderland Tour because of the continuing Coronavirus 19 pandemic. Instead, we went out and captured some of the sights of the season to share with you.
