Wow, 2025 started with such a punch, we've barely had time to say goodbye to 2024. It was a big year for us at Fusion, the culmination of 2 decades in film, television, and media art installations. We shared fun stories & fav art pieces with you, and now here’s the grand finale, saying goodbye to 2024 and a final hurrah in our 20-year celebration! And 2025 is shaping up to be the best yet, thanks to our incredible colleagues & clients. Can’t wait to show you what’s in store. Happy New Year, everyone!

Jack Black's Pee...

"We'd like you to make Jack Black's pee." That time you're at a Santana concert at the Greek Theater in LA and you answer your cell phone. Because it's the vfx supervisor (the late great Ellen Somers) of Gulliver's Travels calling! Fusion's co-founder, Mark Stasiuk, answered the call and when he got off the phone, he still wasn't sure he'd heard her right. While it had been great fun creating enormous ocean waves for The Guardian and flooding corridors for Poseidon, there's something special about making the digital pee that would save the King of Lilliput and his castle. Not to mention also completely dousing Chris O'Dowd (sorry, Chris!) Our 20-year retrospective remembers Poseidon (see last post) launching a tidal wave of demand for our #fluidfx! In fact, Fusion became known world-wide for its extraordinarily natural, realistic-looking water. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Guardian, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Three Musketeers, Pirates of the Caribbean, Allegiant, Gulliver's Travels all needed Fusion's help creating realistic fluid fx scenes. Fusion became an expert consulting firm for fx studios, supervising fx teams, teaching both online classes and on-site courses at places like Disney Animation Studios & Blue Sky. You could say an explosive era of CG fluid fx had begun, with big #vfx studios (ILM, Digital Domain, Scanline) developing outstanding proprietary fluid fx software + big advances in off-the-shelf software for smaller & mid-sized fx studios. A funny thing happened on the way to the volcano... How DO you transition from volcano scientist to award-winning media artist, running a prolific studio? As a volcanologist in disaster management, Mark used #RealFlow to digitally simulate lava flows, visualizing the damage lava would do to nearby villages. If you know Mark Stasiuk , you know he doesn't do anything half-way. And as art director, Linds Redding, once said: "Mark has a brain the size of a small planet." So he swiftly mastered RealFlow, making it perform even better than the designers intended. He became the hub of online RealFlow forums, answering questions about the software that the software designers (Next Limit) couldn't answer. Very quickly, Next Limit pulled him into the fold and had him beta-testing RealFlow. And that's when life took a sharp, unexpected, hairpin turn. One day, while checking diagnostic equipment on the side of a volcano, Mark answers a call... from Hollywood. Word had spread about Mark's RealFlow expertise, and Hollywood (CIS Hollywood to be precise) needed expertise creating digital water on a little film called, Poseidon. They needed Mark in-house at their facility in Hollywood, leading the water fx team. And they needed him, immediately.
