In fact, it is often considered the home of the American civil rights movement due to the many key events that took place here and can now be experienced by traversing the Footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Trail.

To honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., and his Civil Rights work, consider planning a visit to the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center. Although it is closed on Mondays, the center is open Tuesday through Sunday. View the John Lewis series by Benny Andrews. Like Dr. King, John Lewis fought for Civil Rights and spent his life dedicated to making "good trouble."

Want to know more about the secret side of Madison? Okay, it's not really a secret. Locals know all about Laughin’ Place Garden, but it might be new to visitors. This quaint sanctuary is located on the grounds of the Morgan County Library and was a project of the local Magnolia Garden Club. In the center stands the Traveling Musicians statue featuring the donkey, the dog, the cat, and the rooster of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, The Town Musicians of Bremen. Designed by sculptor Elbert Weinberg in 1958, the statue was moved from Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta to its current location in 2012. Georgia travelers might also be delighted to know that their library cards are accepted at the local Morgan County Library. Check out winter vacation reading, rent a movie, or simply step inside to see more sculptures on display.

Don't forget to come downtown to Trick or Treat, and you'll want to check out the Spooktacular Costume Parade and trick or treating at Madison Town Park starting at 4:30 pm. Costumed children 13 & under and costumed pets on leashes—along with their families—are invited to Madison Town Park for a free costume parade. Marchers should line up at the pavilion at 4:15 p.m.—the parade will begin at 4:30’ish. Wagons are welcome for tiny tots. Paraders will circle the park to show off their costumes to judges (this is a good time to take pictures) and to collect treats from Main Street and local businesses and organizations while they last. A limited number of reflective treat bags and glo-necklaces will be given out. Prizes will be awarded for exceptional kid and critter costumes. After parading City of Madison Police and Firefighters will serve up ghoulish grub (hallo-weiners) for paraders to enjoy. Our Story
