For most of my kapa life I printed with the one kapala, but in the last bunch of years I've been spending time with the pre-contact designs. I like deconstructing and reconstructing them and especially like hand painting them. It takes me back to my long ago days as an illustrator and painter and it's a comfortable place to be.

Can hardly believe we're rolling into June and the Westside still looks like this! Downside is it could end up a lot of fuel for fire season. In the meantime, have to enjoy this green for days.

Makaha brush fire, looks like the edge of the old West Course. Last guys who had the Makaha Sheraton tore it down, cut down and let the big old trees die and let the golf course go to heck.

Super awesome and meaningful visit to Moloka'i Nui A Hina to make kapa for the iwi, catch up with dear old friends and make new ones and, boat ride! The class blew me away with their kapa skills but good intentions, good wauke, beautiful place to work and small kine pretty good kumu and awesome things will happen!😄😄❤️❤️ mahalo for the great video😎😎

2024 is looking to be a busy one, doing next level classes with past kapa students under a 3 year ANA grant, classes with Papahana Kuaola familes out in Kaneohe, classes starting up at UH West Oahu for spring semester, classes with Hui Iwi Kuamo'o making sure our iwi kupuna are warm and dressed, more planting wauke, more kapa making and showing. Every time I think things might slow down I discover how so wrong (but so blessed) I am...!

Update: I have been released and was whisked away to another location to recuperate from my recuperations. I'm doing better, had the tiniest bit of stew and poi and bottles of pain meds on hand. Looking forward to getting back to work...kinda💪💪😄👍🏼🤔❤️ e mahalo oukou!

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Ka'upena Wong, a treasured man in the Hawaiian arts, culture, chant, language and many other communities. We were so lucky to have him narrate the Ka Hana Kapa video. I was blessed to call him neighbor, and when I was able to catch him in the morning raking leaves or getting the newspaper, I made it a point to stop and talk story. He didn't remember my name sometimes but would say "Hey pal, you're looking great as always!"☺️ Our kupuna are so precious, spend time with them when you can, it will always be a blessing ❤️❤️

Spent a few weeks compressing my studio from two rooms into one, never fun but always useful. Made it very cozy by adding a small water feature, scent diffusers, scented candles, a Nepal singing bowl and an awesome gourd lamp from . Now my husband comes in asking, "What's happening witch woman?" If he only knew, but I just say, kapa...always kapa...😉

When a bunch of bananas is ready you have to move fast! Despite covering them, the chickens had a snack but there was still enough for 3 gallon bags full and some for the wormies. Perfect way to keep in the freezer and use in your smoothies🤙🏽

One of the beasts I was working on into the evening, this one was 3'x3', the other is 4'x4'. There are stages where it can sit in the water, even in the fridge or freezer if it's not being worked on, but once I'm in active mode with the fermented kapa I don't like to take much time getting it finished. I worked these guys almost to finished size, let the fibers rest for a day then will finish them today after my class at Ala Moana No'eau Designs store 🤙🏽

Happy to be in beautiful Anahola with this enthusiastic hui of mostly virgin kapa makers, but a little direction, some great trees and innate kanaka intelligence means lots of nice kapa being done 😀😀😀

Sometimes when I travel, I gotta bring the gang. My husband was a little enthusiastic with the planer while making this kua so it's just a little over 2 inches high and has the middle cut out so even though it's 45" long I wrapped and strapped it, brought it on the plane and the work goes on 😄😄🤙🏽🤙🏽

Besides the hard work on the i'e kuku beaters we went and gathered kua pohaku, removed sprouting branches from about 30 trees, planted 6 new trees and transplanted 15 baby trees to pots. And the haumana were buzzing along so well I got to do some tuning up on my workhorse beaters, they look like new now!
